How do you get your ppm down to a big fat zero?
« on: October 20, 2007, 08:22:41 am »
My lowest reading to date is 003. I wasted so much pure water when i first bought my system thinking the reading had to be 000 i was constantly flushing out the system cos i thought there might be some chemicals still in the system. I even threw away my first lot of resin thinking it could be contaminated untill i spoke to a local commercial cleaner who says his reading is about 008 and sometimes higher. But i still wont be happy till i hit the 000. Is it down to;

1. mains water not great?  (i think Anglesey water is ok)

2. Resin no good? Is resin resin or can you buy better quality?

3. Cheap ro unit? (currently using pure freedoms)

Or is it all of the above?
What reading does everyone else get?

It should be zero.

You can work ok with it, I have up to 10!  But it should come through at 000ppm

You need an inline TDS meter, get a reading of water after RO and before resin, so you can check if it's your RO or your resin.

While you're finding the answer 003 is good for working all day

I find with the amount of pure water I get through the small resin colums on the small r/o units only last a few weeks, and your tds starts to go up.

I now have a large D/i colum that holds a full bag of resin and this will last about 7-8 months at 0.0pmm before its starts to go up.

Ive got a digital hand held tds metre. Thought this would be more accurate. I did test the water from ro first before it went through di vessel and it seemed normal slightly higher and then polished it off after going through di. Would it help going through 2 di vessels? It seems to dry spot free odd occasion had complaints, it must have contaminated with dirt off frames even after cleaning frames first mostly the windows with vents. Ive only just started on 2nd time round with wfp lost about 2 customers even after explaining to them and going back and doing them again. They think its just as easy for them to stick a hose over them. Some customers just dont listen!!

I have a pure freedom r/o purchased system and have

Upgraded 100 > 200 gpd + booster pump + inline TDS meter

Water in = 187
Water after R/O = 0
Water after DI = 0

after I have shut the system down I always 'flush' the system prior to making water again...

inline tds are known to give incorrect info, where a handhelp is more pricise IMO

No mate. I'm on the Wirral and I get around 250-270. I use 100 gpd with a small inline DI vessel and It hits 000 every time. When I start in up. I usually flush because it starts at around 30 the shoots down to about 10 in a minute then I just flush for around 5 minutes until it hits 000.

How big is you DI vessel because it could be your DI vessel is too small and the flow through it is too high thus making no impact.

That's big enough at 30l, there could be a problem with it though which I have come across. Pull the tubing out of the head , it should be round. When I had a problem with my TDS not going down I found the tubing to be out of shape, it was shaped oval. If it is then you need to cut that bit off and then put tube back in.

You will also find that your resin is spent as the atmosphere would have got into your resin so you will have to change it.

It could be any of the above but even poorer grade resin should bring the water down toshow 000 at first I think.
If you test the water out of the hosereel when it's been unused a few hours there may be a little contamination from within the hose.  Are you testing it after the hosereel or immediately after the resin bottle?  Mind you, if you run the water a couple of minutes, even testing after the hosereel should show 000.
