To sill or not to sill? That is my question
« on: October 18, 2007, 06:58:41 pm »
Lost a job yesterday on an upstairs flat because and i quote "you're washing the crap off the window onto the window sill." So my question is, how much do you clean? Windows only. Windows and frame. Windows, frame and sills. The above plus walls, dogs bed, dirty dishes and the laundry ;D ;D So what do you do and where do you draw the line?

I believe that you have to do the sills every time, frames no.

Whether trad or WFP the sills have always been cleaned, so far as I'm concerned that is the minimum that should be done.
Frames when trad were extra, though if they were already very clean, I'd often give a quick wipe around with a damp scrim just to keep them looking tidy.

Now I'm WFP the whole lot gets done, doors and frames included, and especially all the UPVC right up to and including the guttering on conservatories.
I've found it to be a huge selling point in truth, and it is still way quicker than doing them trad and only doing the glass and sills.

Ian, How do "you" do sills upstairs wfp? Do you do all the windows and then go back over the sills with the brush angle changed? Do you change brush? Any tips?

I generally have enough of an 'angle' on the brush that allows me to at least to use the side of the bristles on the brush to wipe upstairs sills.
It generally only needs a fairly cursory wipe to get them reasonably clean I find.
You can't see of course, but as I've not had a single complaint I can only assume I am doing them to the satisfaction of the customer.

i quote for the window which includes frames and sills. I know some avoid the frames but i consider it half a job to just clean the glass. And a clean frame and sill are eyecatching and can make all the difference between a good job and a brilliant job.

I did lose a couple when I first went to WFP due to the sills not being clean enough.  However, judging by previous comments they had made, they were anti WFP anyway and would have found an excuse for cancelling anyway.

If you are wfp, get a cill brush. Good bit of kit.  Go to Alex Gardeners site for more info.

on upstairs windows these brushes work a dream.

Saves complaints!

did a new clean today and the sills and frames were really filthy.
The lady paid me when I started and then went out.  when she came back I was on the last couple of windows and she came running round to me looking really panicky.   " how much extra will it be for doing the frames?  I only wanted the windows doing."

When I told her the frames and sills were included in the price she was shocked.  When cleaning a window trad or wfp I do the lot.  IMO its a half job otherwise.
Veni, vidi, vino, splatus.

Had my first cancellation today with this strange excuse. "All that water's made my front door stick shut."
It was a custy I thought I was going to lose but the excuse was great considring I only do the tops WFP and her door has a canopy that makes the water fall clear of the door by 600mm.

As for frames and ledges, now I'm WFP (top only at the mo) all the frames and sills get done, top and bottom.

i always do the sill because they get really dirty. i do the frames on the first clean and they stay clean for ages only needing the occassional wipe.

Sill brush for me too on my 15ft Pole. To heavy on the 28ft so just angle the brush to wipe the sill. Also clean frames, doors (if UPVC, not wooden most leak) all part of the service. Custies love it!!
