Before wfp I had 300 customers that I did on a 6 weekly round, I was very really on time? except in the summer months, but when I first changed over to wfp I ended up having 2 weeks in every six off.

I decided I wanted more work, so along with a £150 3 line advert in yellow pages, I printed some leaflets off and whenever I went to a new area, were I knew prices would be reasonable if not good, I would get the Boss to go leaflet dropping in these areas.

From my YP advert some months back I had a call from a very affluent area, (posh to some of you ;D) now this was a big Georgian house in a road full of them and all 3 stories high, I priced the Job and got it and the lady of the house wasn't to disappointed that I could not reach the top floor with my 24' universal pole, Now she might not have been disappointed but I certainly was, So I came home and bought myself the 34' hybrid XTel pole, The next time I arrived at this Job, I was able to do the top floor, Now this lady was delighted and so was I.

A couple of weeks ago I did the Job again, only this time the boss was with me, and while I was to clean this particular Georgian house, the Boss decided she would go off on a leaflet drop, Now this is were the fun started, I started to set my gear up and the Boss had been gone for about 5 minutes, I had not even got my pole out of the trailer when my mobile went off, I spoke to the lady on the phone and she told me I can see the lady who posted the leaflet, talking to someone at the bottom of the drive, I got there and it was the conservative offices, I priced this Job and got it, Then I had to go off and price another one that had stopped the boss (at the bottom of the drive) I got that one as well, by the time I  got back to my original Job, there was a chap stood by my car waiting for me, now this chap has a big bed and breakfast house, I priced this one and got it, by the time I left this area I picked up another 2 big houses.

Since then the phone has rung a few more times for this particular area, each one I priced I have got, I priced one yesterday and this was to include her conservatory and the roof, also on ever occasion she wants her greenhouse done, priced it and got the Job only on the condition I could get to the top windows, as she didn't think I could get to them? This is a nice little earner this one, although all of them have there conservatories done, this is the only one that wants her  greenhouse done and every time.

After having a chat to a couple of these customers, it seems to me they have had w/cleaners in the past, but none of them come back? they also couldn't do the top floor windows, I told them I wasn't the cheapest w/c but I price because I do return and I need to make a living, if the job  is under priced then this could well be a reason for them not returning.

It is now coming close to me closing my books again with the extra 2 weeks now booked up with very well priced property's.
The Boss took a couple of pictures of the house with the conservatory and the greenhouse.
Almost forgot, I now have 548 customers and I can still do my round on time in 6 weeks.

I read this post with great interest Jeff as it seems like your situation mirrors mine but that you are a step ahead of me.
Just like you I do a 6 weekly turnaround that changed to working 4 weeks in 6 once I got used to WFP.  Since then I have been slowly starting to fill the gaps - also with the aid of a 3 liner in YP.  I say slowly because I am trying to fill it with work that has some quality to it.  I could have filled the gap with mediocre work of poor access (locked gates etc) several times over but I'm not prepared to sell myself short any more.  Due to taking this stance, the decent work has started to drift my way.  At the moment it's a trickle but I think the day is not too far away when I experience the sort of thing that has just happened to you.
This month I am heading for my highest paid month ever - and with a week off too.  It seems tyo be just starting to click into place.  Not before time either as I've been at it since 1991.
I have in place now a minimum charge of £10, I don't want to waste my time pricing for £5 jobs anymore and with this structure in place I find I'm getting more and better work, I could have had 6 new ones today but the were all terraced houses and I won't waste my time doing them, half of them said yes to a tenner and the other half were thinking about it, so I told them I don't have time to waste on customers who want to think about it, these customers could be  problematic in the future.

My 3 liner YP advert has paid for its self over and over, I broke into another new area a few months back with one customer in another good area, What I didn't know is every friday this woman goes to a coffee morning, and whilst writing this, I took another call from this area taking my total number of customers in this area to nine, there isn't one under £15 and there is no w/c in this area, so I told her I would do a leaflet drop when I price it tomorrow, We don't stick out hundreds of leaflets but between 30-50 if I get 2-3 calls back from them I'm a happy bunny, because people talk.

I'm thinking of a three liner, What's the suggested wording?
I just had to check my adver again to make sure I was saying the right things, mine is actually a 4 liner and I paid  £128.97 as a last minute special offer.
My advert is very simple it starts off with my company name on the first line, my second line tells them I use the ladderless system and my 3rd  line tells them I also do guttering facias etc. This year is also my highest number of guttering jobs increased by at least triple.
My fourth line is my telephone numbers.
So unless your one of the big boys who employ others? or in an area were w/c are tripping over them selfs I would go for a 3/4 liner.

Thanks for that Jeff- Shiner, i think it is really good advice. Yellow pages phoned me up, the man was really pushy and wanted a meeting. Perhaps I should just phone up and arrange similar to what you suggest now that I know it's not pie in the sky.
This is a very interesting thread, and I shall tell you why.

When i first came on the forum all I really wanted to know was how much people were earning per day. It was quite hard to get a balanced view of this because everytime someone ventured a price someone else had to trump it. In the end I decided £200 pd was the target, but in reality because of my time constraints I consider anything over £130pd good.

The next thing I wanted to know was how many customers should I have and what might be a reasonable capacity for a one man band. This thread comes as close to answering this in a sensible manner as anything I have seen.

There is a short story(you have probably seen the film verion) by Somerset Maughan- The verger of St Mary's-. This guy gets the sack when a posh new vicar takes over and finds out the verger can't read or write. He opens a tobaconists in his front room because he's unemployable in a depression and at his wits end. Things go well and he ends up with a chain of twenty tobacconists all across London. The denoument comes when the bank manager asks him to sign some important papers and learns that he still can't read or write.
"Good Lord. you own an empire of pipe and tobbacco shops stretching the length and breadth of London!! What on earth would you be if you could read and write?!!"
"Oh, that's easy, the verger of st Mary's"

So where might you be if you had a signed van, or had gone wfp five years ago?
Just kidding.

Just kidding.
Before I went wfp, I called it a brush on a stick and wondered  how on earth this method would not only work but do a good Job, I first discovered how good a job it did when I lost my very first customer to a wfp w/c who covers the same area as me, me and this guy are now very good friends.

I came on to this forum and asked loads of questions and as usual all the guy's responded with there own replies, now this became mind blowing and confusing to someone who knew nothing about wfp (this is why I wrote the guide) you have to take all the replies you get, then you have to sit down and look over them all, then you have to make your own decision at the best route that is best for you and your business, it took me months to make the desicion that I thought was best for myself and my business.

I first thought the trolley would be the best way to go and built 2 of my own, Mk1 and then Mk2 then I decided I didn't want the trolley and binned this idea, then I settled on my trailer system and I haven't looked back since.

I get loads of guy's reply to a topic I may post, saying ''when you get a sign written van'' I will get a van, but only when I and my company are ready too, then I'll spend weeks looking for the right sort of van before I make the commitment.

My advice to anyone who wants to change or add wfp to there own business is,  do it as soon as possible, but not before taking the time to sit down and study your own business, look at your own customer base, then ask questions on the forums, get your answers, Talk to the suppliers and then make your decision on what you want to buy.

As for going wfp 5 years ago? I wish I did it 10 years ago. ;) who knows I may have had a fleet of them by now.

Just a couple of before and after shots,of  a dirty clean you have done, ie guttering, conservatory, or what ever. but they must be dated with time/date stamp, or with a picture of the sun newspaper, Not page 3  ;D
Its closing in a few days so hurry. ;) if you want a new pole.

I think an average minimum of £200 a day is a decent target bearing in mind we are referring to turnover rather than profit.  I don't acieve that myself but that's because I have a workload that is not yet close to full capacity.  Therefore, if I fancy a few easier days, I tend to earn much less for several days and pace myself better.  I have achieved over £300 a couple of times when I've really pushed the boat out but there are other days when I'm happy just to go out there and make a quick £50.  I achieved a 30% increase in my turnover last year but this was mostly gobbled up by higher expenditure and investing in more equipment.  I am about to buy a Superlight 2 pole from one of Alex's agents who are based nearer to me.  As I live in a flat with a timelocked entry system and live on my own, I have trouble receiving parcel deliveries.  Therefore I will go through the agent and travel 20 odd miles to collect it.  That pole (and possibly a lighter high telescopic pole) should be my last big outlay until I change my van again in 2010.  It will be nice to earn well without it being burnt up by re-investing.

As for customer numbers, I currently have 223 on my books.  They are all shapes and sizes and range from £5 to £108.  I would probably consider around 300 to be a full workload, especially as I am targetting bigger properties.  I'm happy to do smaller jobs too but only if there are no access hassles.  I have very few left under a tenner now because like Jeff, no new work is priced under £10.  I did make an exception recently though.  I do a row of three tiny cottages that are attached to each other.  For years I was doing just two of them (now £6 apiece).  Then a new person moved into the third one and wanted a service.  I didn't have the front to charge £10 while charging the other two £6 for identical work.  I'm not complaining as the £18 can be earned in half an hour if I get my finger out.  Not the greatest paying part of my business but certainly adequate for what it is.

WFP and this forum have totally changed my outlook

Nice one Shiner  ;)

Don't get me wrong guy's, I still have some low paid jobs at a fiver, all little OAP bungalows, I have no intention of binning them, they have stuck with me from the beginning,  they all know me and give me some stick when I get there, all done in fun, with offers of cups of tea and biscuits, and I still do them all Trad style, again just to keep them happy and my hand in on Trad work.

Last night I decided to have the full weekend off  ;D but I have already been out this morning to price 2 more Jobs, one a commercial property that was a complete waste of time, it could not be priced for more than a tenner, 6 windows in total, I have to do it when they are there and the parking issues, well there seems to be a lottery for parking places, its across the other side of town to me, so I told them the best way I could, that I didn't want the Job.

I got the next one that's a domestic, and I have another one to price just after midday today. And this is another from the coffee morning gang, she told me I come highly recommended and I'm a good sales man, now that's a new one on me  ;D  so much for a full weekend off, but it still keeps coming in.

The work does not keep coming in for me.  I live in the West Midlands and thus far I have discovered that it seems to be a terrible area for window cleaning.

Yes it does.  It just seems easier that way due to the delivery problems at my place.
