Like Matt said it keeps the crap out of the pump, without the strainer it gets into the wobble plates and can damage the membrane.

Mine has no fittings just a male pipe, I just pushed the hose on and tightened with a jubilee clip.

Ditto, you don't even need a clip on the inlet side.

The tank does collect rubbish that gets moved around the system.

wat saved all my problems waz I put another 10 inch particle filter after
the di to catch all the bits of small resin which seems to get in the tank along
with any other crap .Believe me it does need changing every 6 months but I
dont get any more dirt in the strainer, but IT DEFFINATLY does need a stainer
or a filter coz the pump will last only half the time I know ;) ;) ;)
Particle filter 2/3 quid new pump a lot more Edd
