I want to build a radio frequency on off switch remote control for my pump, just to cut the power to it so it turns off. I dont like the idea of a tap, I want to control the flow with a small keyfob size remote. It will need a long range (100m+ ). So anybody that has already done this or could help, please post, thanks, Luke

When I got into wfp it was with a trolley from Peter Fogwill and it had a remote keyfob on-off switch.

Despite much tinkering it was never really satisfactory in that it would turn on at about a max of fifteen metres and off at about five. I think the pump brushes caused too much interference.

I went to a tap at the join between the pole hose and the main hose.

Yeah, range can be the problem, but I'm hoping someone with enough experience might come along with help

i have one on mine, bought it from the local car accessorie shop, it is designed to turn the neon light on and off, it ranges about 50 - 60 meters so not to bad think it was about 30 quid with all the wiring

I have looked into the possibility of a radio remote control and I can let you know, not to waste your money?....radio frequency has a very nasty habit of bouncing of buildings,being blocked by trees etc.

If you buy a 100m range remote, straight away you can deduct at least a third from the range, so this will only give you 75m in total distance?, if you don't have line of site of the reciever,  you can deduct even more from the total, week batteries in the remote can make switching a pain, to over come this sometimes holding the remote button in for a couple of seconds may help.

Don't run the reciever on the same power supply that feeds your pump! give it its own supply.
Also ambient conditions will effect the operation ie:- Rain, fog, also strong sunlight can affect the operation.

So as you can see from the above it has a lot of Negatives  to it, so unless you can over come the above problems, it will become a nightmare for you.
A radar transmitter and reciever will over come most of them, but again it has to have line of site, Not much use in our game.

not sure if this helps, if you hold your key fob against your head and activate your alarm/central locking you get a much increased distance than normal....not sure if your head acts as an ariel (or if its healthy!) but it works. i was shown this a few years back! if you doubt it go out in the street and give it a go!!  its not a wind up

My wife's car is notoriously difficult to get the remote locking/c/locking to work at anything over a metre away. I've just tried it from five metres and it works every time.

Mrs Gold has tried it now and it works for her.

I know it can be rubbish but I am looking for a solution that will work, maybe i will need something with a higher frequency, it may cost more, but I'm not going to throw the idea out of the window just because some people have problems
