I just bought a new karcher wet and dry vacuum. Got it pat tested and all was fine. Now I used it first time the other day, all going honkey dorey until I smell burning. Touch the top of vacuum and its roasting hot. Something was over heating inside I presume. Anyways the instructions were dyer about how to fit the bag so not sure if that was attached properly.It seemed to be though. Does anyone know what may have happened?anyone else had similar prob with this model.I was dry vacuuming.turned it off once smelt burning, although no smoke came out!

its hard to say without seeing it, either it 'naturally' runs hot and the smell is from the plastic as it heats up OR, seeing how you said the motor still runs ok, it might be a faulty capacitor/suppresor?

Can you take the machine back to where you bought it?

must admit the instructions were absolutley diabolical!!!

I am trying to use it simply with bag for dry vacuuming.

anyhow it also has a filter on it but dunno if this is for the wet process cos its removable. hmmmm Its a real pain in arse cos I want to use this machine this week!
does anyone have the karcher wet and dry and have any idea what Im talking about!!!!

The only filter for wet cleaning should be a the sponge type that sits under the motor unit. Any fabric and paper filters should come out.

I am reliably informed that instructions are getting worse and only using pictures because a lot of cleaning personal are unable to read english.... i'm not sure i agree or not. I say cost-cutting plays a big part

aha the filter was paper type material, well card/papery. Maybe this has been problem????Altho it shows no signs of burning or singeing sorry to sound simple but yes the instructions were so pathetic!
I will test tomorrow and take the paper filter out. would this filter be placed in and paper bag removed if this was to be used as a wet vac?

DG the filters will have no part to play in the burning smell, but yes, all filters and bags (apart from a sponge filter under the motor, which isnt always present on all makes of wet and dry anyway) have to come out for wet use.

It is also my experience that a wet hose can take an eternity to dry out and as such will limit the amount of dry vacuuming you can do. I have ruined many a paper bag by using the cleaner with a hose that was still wet

no its not the filter cos it does state that filter must be in at all times. It is actually making a different noise.could the motor have gone?I am fuming cos this was first time vacuum was used it was only tuned on for 2 mins before problem started.This vacuum is brand new and was pat tested just a week earlier and passed.what could it be? I ordered the model a2004 on line so its all hassle of sending back now

It may just be smelling because it is new, it may stop after it has been run in for while.

remove ALL evidence of it being PAT tested (as it is not unheard of for companies to blame the PAT testing procedue for any damage that has occured) and send it back. My own thoughts woudl be that if you only want to use it dry and only dry then dont bother with a wet and dry because they can be noiser and the tool kits are never as good, even some of the so-called 'industrial' wet and dry cleaners costing £100'ssssss are a pile of poo 

Sometimes i can barely belive the price of some of the commercial vacuum cleaners.
