Shall i do it or not?
« on: July 05, 2007, 07:33:24 pm »
Hi all,

wonder if anyone could offer any advice. i used to to work for a cleaning company as a team leader. they went bust in the end and that was the only job that i have ever been good at. they had contracts with Persimmon homes.

would it be worth while starting up on my own? i already have the basis of a business (company name, bank account, materials etc..) how much do u reckon it would cost me to get going either on part time or full time??

any help would be appreciated

thanks alot dg-cleaning, i didn't no weather it would work.

the company i worked for have been bust for a while now, since then i've been working in dead end jobs and brewing with the idea.

i just need to find the work. maybe if i approach estate agents and private landlords. i can do national building companies but there is only going to be me working until i get going.

Neil, are you wanting to work alone or employ staff?

I work alone and only advertised once (i used flyers). It attracted a bit of work (including two clients who have been with me now for over three years and both have found me more work amongst thier friends, family, and neighbours). For the first few months i had to subsidise my income with a part-time job at Tesco but it was worth it. I was on the checkouts and just by talking to the people i was serving (i always seemed to attract the same shoppers for some reason) i gained one new customer who wanted cleaning work doing ;D

The rest of my work was word of mouth, once i'd started cleaning for about 5 people i was getting calls from thier friends, or being acosted by their neighbours.

But thats ok if you work alone, i have more than enough work for one, i dont know what i'd do if i needed to find more work.

i  started with a postcard in a local post office....got 2 jobs in the first week from that....then i got a grant of £750 from a local enterprise agency...course i had to attend a key business skills course and put together a 36 page business plan before they coughed up the cash, but it kicked me off.......I placed an ad in the Yellow Pages and the jobs rolled in from then on......4 yrs later and 5 ladies working for me, things have gone exceptionally quiet, but i guess interest rate rises and crap wages in the SW dictate that the luxury of having a domestic cleaner is exactly that, a luxury :)
anyone with facebook can add me at this link ...  jan 'minkeedj' kindon  .... if you can be bothered lol

Not sure how much weekend work you will get, esp not domestic as usually people want houses doing when they are at work.

I do two houses on a Saturday (though only one today) because it suites the client, but thats unusual.

If you are good at cleaning, are reliable, and are willing to bend over backwards to accomodate your client, then you should have no shortage of work and you will get your price. Personally i would always charge by the job (not the hour) and always use my own cleaning stuff, but thats just how i like it. You may find it easier to do different, i could not afford to charge by the hour.

As i said before, i had to switch a full-time job for a part-time supermarket job in order that i could establish a business. It was financially very difficult but i have a good accountant and it was worth doing because in less than a year i was where i wanted to be - working alone with enough work.

I would like more one-off work, but then again i dont advertise for it, and, generally speaking, one-off big jobs are much too much for one person. The one-offs i have done have tended to be smaller jobs.

BTW, i only have a car too, i didnt want a van. Mine is a Citreon Saxo in Molly Maid blue of all colours (it wasnt my first choice lol), before that i had an old Astra Estate which was too big really, but i couldnt half get some stuff in it.

cheers guys you've all been such great help, i feel more confident.

i been out to all my local shops and put up my business cards, just designing some flyers and a letter to post to estate agents.

the only thing i'm worried about is the job front, can i actually afford to take the risk? i dont mind getting myself a part time job if it means me getting more work cleaning. i just need to make sure my bills are paid!!!!!!

i can use my car no problem, its a vauxhall astra and plenty of room. i was talking to my wife and a van would not be practical for the young one and its far too big.

all i've got to think about is getting work and building up client base.....

Its a personal choice, but i would avoid putting cards in windows of shops and post offices as i've seen the sort adverts from people who WANT cleaners and you can see the type of person it will attract - ie you wont get the 'going rate' for sure.

I started my business with a friend, i couldnt drive at that time and my friend didnt like the idea of cleaning houses, so that left me stuck with a handful of clients and no car! Everyone rallied round and helped me with lifts etc, so whilst i learnt to drive i managed to get about (how i dont know...!), i'm just saying that i can SO empathise with your situation.

A tip on flyers: make them A4 (cos there is nothing worse than a badly cut small flyer), use colour, dont use 'cheese' in slogans cathphrases or names (i will NEVER forget seeing a leaflet from an outfit called 'the three dustkaters'  :P), never ever ever ever advertise prices, if you are insured then say so, if you take equipment and supplies (people are willing to pay more for this kind of service) then say so, in fact say as much as you can about what you DO do, as briefly as you can. The times i've replied (by email) to flyers just to see what they do and dont do and found that in fact they are offering a full all-in-one service, just that they omitted to say so in the leaflet...oh and NEVER use the word 'maid' as you will be confused with other companies.

I have also been reluctant to suggest in any way at all that clients will have 'more time to themselves' by having help with cleaning, i see this as quite patronising to people who already have too many things to do or those who would love to do their own housework but are now physically unable to do so. I never make any reference to the advantages of having a cleaner, i am there to sell myself NOT the service, in otherwords folk have already decieded they need a cleaner BEFORE they ask you to quote them, its just a case of which cleaner they use and not whether they have a cleaner or not.

Belive me, if you have the patience of a saint for your client, if you dont come across as 'to' wierd (i am borderline most days  ;D), and you are good then you will get the work.

There is only one thing better than someone ringing you up and saying "I need a cleaner and Mrs X reccomended you" and thats Mrs X saying "Yes, i gave her your number but dont you DARE drop me when you get too busy, i need you".

Christmas i get loads of tips and presents off clients, i alos get odd tips throughout the year, and in one year no less than FOUR people told me that they were increasing the fee i was charging as they felt it was time they paid me more.

DG

my own house ticks-over (thank god), my partner is tidy and helps me out a lot though i dont like to ask him for tioo much help as he works really hard in a full time job too.

I am not tidy and my house is like a building site (has been now for 4 years). I long for the day that it is finished and all done so that a quick wipe 'does'. My mom helps with the ironing so between the 3 of us that gets done (eventually).

Dusting, i am ashamed to say, features so low down on my list. I dust more for others than i do me, though i note that none of my clients are arsed about dusting either, they'd sooner i clean a bathroom or a floor...

Kim Woodburn said "if you are short on time then prioriotise. A dirty toilet will smell but dust wont" and i SO stick to that theory. My bathroom sparkles, the kitchen is a work-in-progress so we are cooking in the garage, but i always keep it clean.

An now for a confession...i once got Henry out, put him in the lounge, and then forgot all about using it...for a whole EIGHT days. Yes, he just sat there grinning.

The ironing board has not been folded away in a long time either. I used to be such a good boy, my mom is a cleaning fanatic, but since i started working for 'real' people my standards didnt slide as much as they did fall over the edge and smash to the floor...

cant wait till i get my first client. when i had my window cleaning business a few years ago all my business was by word of mouth and recommendations.
