Self Assessment online
« on: June 19, 2007, 08:37:52 pm »
I was just going to do my  self assessment tax form online. I started doing it and then came to the page about earnings, it only lets you fill it in if your income was below £15k. Do I need to go to another page for earnings over £15k, I have tried to contact them but they close at 8pm

im pretty sure you cant do it online if you earn above £15k
I'll be earning under £15k forever then.

From memory  whether you are on line or not if you turn over/earn less than 15k you do not have to provide a profit and loss account or breakdown. Say for instance you are a childminder and you earn 12k, then instead of claiming this and that (wear of carpet etc, cost of toys) IR say you don't need to bother.

Now say You're a window cleaner, you earn 16k, then you do need a profit and loss account. ie total sales 23k cost of goods or services 5k, motoring diesel 1k, insurance etc1k equals 16k profit.

After the profit there are things like use of home as office and depreciation on vehicles.

Be warned though, don't take advice of idiots ( for want of a better word) like me on tax issues. The above is just the giste and may be incorrect.

The figure of 'earnings' is the total turnover including all business expenses!

As I understand it if the earnings ie turnover come below £15,000 you can do an online assessment.

I have spoken to a very nice man at the tax office today. He has given me all the info I need for now. He even gave me his name  to contact him if I had any problems filling it in.
