washing tea towels for commercial job
« on: May 14, 2007, 11:37:39 pm »
Hi
We get asked to do this quite a lot with our office cleaning.

Just wondered what sort of price to charge for the service, or if you don't charge, and count I as a freebie.

this particular company are of medium size 50-60 staff, every night clean so up to 10 tea towels per week I would guess.

Thanks
Lisa

I would normally ask when quoting if this needed doing and add it into my quotation so it is not seen as an extra cost.

If you have been doing them for free you can't really start charging now but in future tell them there is a cost attached.  I would just charge them the amount you give your cleaner to wash the towels, I would prob say 15 - 25p per towel depending on how many as they are not very expensive to replace.

Hi fox

We haven't done any for this company, just been asked to do it.
I guess the cost of a load and dry at the laundrette would be about right?
Its £3 per load wash and then £1 or so dry but then that would take 30 mins or so to do. Would a tenner a week for washing and handling bee too much?

Hi Lisa

Yes almost certainly £10 per week would be too much for up to 10 towels!  You might have been able to get away with that if you had included it your quote (I understand you have only just been asked but remember this for next time) but not per towel.  £2.50 is more on the mark, what you need to do is get a few more of your contracts to have this service and then they can all be washed together (sew a different colour thread in each sites towels) this way you will end up making a bit but don't ever think you will make much of a profit for this type of work.  Washing t towels is more of an add on favour than anything else.  Haven't you got someone who can wash them at home or do them yourself, a launderette is a very expensive option.

The company you are cleaning for needs to feel it's getting as much as possible for their money. Don't mention all specifics, surprise them with the little extra's that way they will love you. It's normal to raise the price of a contract at the start of each year, if you have already quoted then tell them the price increase will be due soon to the rise in products, electricity etc but not to worry you will throw in cleaning their towels for free, that way you won't loose any money.

I personally don't charge for t-towel cleaning it is just a nice touch. I do however charge to replace them when they get a bit tatty. Came across one of those stalls on a high street at christmas, a bloke selling 5 for a quid, the proper checkered ones that you see everywhere, bought a bag full and carry them in the van. I just sell them on when i am doing a consumable delivery. Tatty ones are good to chuck away after kitchen cleans.

I'm charging a customer £2.99 a week to wash 2 tea towels and another £2.99 for 2 hand towels for the loos, plus vat.
They don't seem at all bothered by this so I assumed it was about right. Maybe it's a bit steep given what I've read here!

Just check with your local laundry the last time I did (2001) in Darlington a laundry charged £2 to supply and wash/dry 10 tea towel per week delivered.
