Taking someone on

I'm sure i've seen something about this before, but couldn't find it.
I have been taking on a lot of work lately and am looking at having someone work with me, or have a 2nd van running.
Can i have someone work for me as self-employed as it will be cheaper and easier than employing them.
Is it right that they have to have work of their own if they are self-employed or can they just invoice me each week/month?

If you sub work out then the person you are subbing to will have to have a majority of work which is their own which is classed as their main income otherwise you may be responsible for their holiday pay, pensions, etc because you would be classed as their employer.
