Solvent stainguard - Delamination?
« on: March 24, 2007, 03:06:04 pm »
I recently applied 1 .75 litres of Ashbys Solvent Stain Guard to approximately 25 sq metres of a Victoria tufted wool carpet.
The recommended dilution rate is 1 litre to 16/20 sq metres  (twice that for heavy duty rugs)
I have today been advised that some rucks have appeared in the carpet which I assume have been caused by the solvent affecting the latex and or secondary backing.
The carpet supplier is sending in a fitter to see if if restretching is possible.
Any words of comfort out there or am I totally stuffed.
Yours (fingers and legs crossed)
Eddie

Are you sure there is a latex backing.  Most (good) wool carpets dont have latex secondary backings.  Least not in my limited experience.  I wouldnt have thought that the amount you put down would have any effect on the backing anyway.  If it has delaminated then re-stretching will not solve your problem.  Good luck with it anyway, best, Dave.

This happened to me with a solvent based protector once. It was where I had over applied it - and I think this may be what you have done. You talk about dilution rates - do you mean application rate (solvent protector is ready to use, so don\\\'t dilute it with water!).

Firstly - dry it with a blower and open windows. DO NOT PULL IT ABOUT in this condition - you will permanently damage it. Good news is it should return to normal as it dries.

Hope this helps.

Eddie had you just cleaned the carpet then applied the protector or was the carpet bone dry?

Thanks for your comments
.
I was only advised of the problem on Saturday so will speak to Ashbys on Monday.
Obviously I should have said application rate and not Dilution rate.

The carpet was cleaned on the Wednesday and appeared dry when I sprayed the stainguard on Friday.
I know that wool can hold up to a third of it's own weight of water and appear to be dry could that be a cause of the apparent problem

It could be a problem with these new light weight carpets which have been on the market for about 2 years now. they delaminate very easily. A very well known franchise S...........  in this area had problems just with cleaning and had to replace the carpets. Be warned  the slightest over wetting and they delaminate. I'm very cautious about applying carpet protectors

carpet fitters have problems with them because they can't be stretched like traditional carpets and can very easily go out of shape

In the past I have used solvent soil protector and have had  a problem with what looks like delaminatiion but is actually rucking.

The solvent gets to the base of the carpet and under it causing it to ruck up, if you leave it alone the solvent will evaporate and the carpet will go down to its shape, dont restretch it or you will get into a terrible mess.

A lot of the carpet shops  around me say that they use water based protector when they treat in store, but they dont, they use solvent as it dries much quicker and you arent putting gallons of water on to a new carpet that will take ages to dry out.

Hi Murky
I was too late to stop the fitter taking off an inch all round.
he carpet looks OK at the moment , but so does the stairs and landing which he did not touch.
Hopefully if the carpet does tighten the gripper will hold it. The fitter did make the comment to the customer that this carpet has plenty of stretch.
He also made the comment that there appears to be water stains on the underlay only on the areas where the rucks were.
Interesting as I went in reasonably dry using the inline steam mate and had minimal water loss in the job.
I have collected a few pieces of the trimmings and will play about with water and apply the stainguard to varying degrees of wetness/dryness
Thanks to all that replied
