IBC's v's baffle tank
« on: March 03, 2007, 08:48:41 am »
We are in the process of setting up a second van and have been sourcing the items we need.

Protectacote, pumps, poles etc all ordered and signwriting being done next Friday, however I have a question for you guys regarding the water tank.

We installed (professionally by our local LDV garage) a 1000 ltr IBC tank in our convou 5 years ago and have had no problems (but them no accidents !!!).

The new van will just about hold a 1000 ltr but for safety reasons Im only putting
in a 650 ltr one.

The IBC tanks are for sale on ebay at £30 and we can pick up from Bristol.  The wc baffle tanks are £200 plus Vat and delivery  :P

Is there any safety reason we are not aware of why these IBC's are less safe than these new ones ?  IMO they look safer when installed.

Any thoughts please and thanks.

Morning sarah
have a look on the ionics website there is a demo of a un-baffled tank in an accident  :-\

There is a post on here about this, you can put farmers pipe in the tank coiled up to baffle it.

Thanks Bond  ;D

We used pipe in our current one but the difference in price just made me suspect potential problems.

Still unclear if its unsafe if self baffled though  ;D

Also anyone buy a 650 ltr cheaper thasn £200 + Vat + delivery ?

IBC ok when it is completely full its when you start using the water out of it you start getting the problems with the water sloshing about in it. For the sake of £200 and your life at the end of day go for the BAFFLED TANK.

If you properly baffle your IBC
and it is well within your Plated carrying capacity
and it is securely fastened
then it is fine.

If not all of the above then it could be a death trap!

Morning  Sarah

we have an IBC in our van and we have no problems at all with it
I have filled it with land drainage pipe and have no movement at all from the water
the cost was about £36 from my local builders merchant
all you do is just coil it round inside the tank
 hope this helps
Andy ;)

AL,  thats what hubby tells me, but I' so tight with money  ;D ;D

Alex /Andy.  Thanks for your views - we have had no problems either and the difference in prices pays for the signwriting on the Van.  ;D

Also try ringing Smiths of Dean in Coleford for a tank price - I thought they were very good.

Hi, I am planning to use a 600litre IBC in my van, and am going to baffle it with plastic drainage pipe cut down and rammed in so its all tight together, use the widest bore pipe you can get, Jewsons, b+q anywhere.

I will be cutting lenths of pipe to aprox 3/4 of way up IBC.

Hope this helps.

Goochie.
