Which 18 footer is best?
« on: February 22, 2007, 03:10:22 pm »
I need to replace my Universal because it's badly worn. Which is best for longevity and lightness out of Facelift, Predator and Universal?

What would you go for?

I would definitely go for the Predator - for a number of reasons - you most likely wouldn't noticemuch of a weight or rigidity difference between the predator and facelift at this height.  The predator is a lot cheaper to buy, less than half the price of the facelift, plus it has better clamps and an alloy basecap.  We were probably the first to supply the Predator and none hve come back through wear.

The universal isn't a pole I'd recommend - too heavy.

The 18ft Universal pole is only 100g heavier than an 18ft Predator. The 18ft Universal is quite a bit stiffer than the Predator though. The Predator will last longer though as the clamps have more adjustment in them about 7mm instead of 4mm.

We have both types in stock which enables an accurate comparison.

I keep banging on about this, but why have an 18ft pole, I take you are having 3 x 6ft?
Why not try a 4 x 4ft pole, it will make your life so much easier, you can reach everything on domestic except 3rd storey, which an 18ft won't reach either, and when you close it down it is so much easier to handle and work on ground floor windows.

Granted, it does tend to whip at the joints when fully extended, but the sections dont bend.

Do the predator sections wear like the universal ones do? I know Alex said that the clamps have more adjustment, but I have found that the Universal poles wear to the point that even a new clamp doesn't really make a lot of difference. I find the first few inches on the no.2 section are so worn that the sections just spin round. I'd like to perhaps spend a bit more money and get something that doesn't do this.

Gardiners made it for me, I presume it is a universal, they do wear out with use, I have just had a new one delivered on Tuesday, it was 100 plus vat and bits and bobs. If you ring Kirsty she will sort you out.

Just ring Kirsty up, it is made to order - i assume they just cut one down to the right length.

I swear by that size, the first day I got one I beat my best earning day by 40 quid, and continually earn more, i did wear the first one out in about 8 months, but that is due to contnuos use and up ad down with it all day, on the plus side my long pole doesnt get used much so wont wear out very quickly.

I also put a plastic Addis broom head on them to keep them extremely light.

Reading other posts by GLR such as this one.......http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=31869.0#msg249235

He uses a 34ft Facelift carbon which he breaks down to use at 18ft for 90% of the time ;)
