« on: February 02, 2007, 09:36:12 pm »
Hello all!

Me being from the US, I am curious to how people from the other side of the globe get prospects attention.

Of course I am not asking for in depth secrets, but just an overview as to what you do to get it.

thank you

Knock on doors, leaflet drop, advertise in a local parish magazine, recommendations, prospective customers watching me work on a neighbour's property (this is where a sign written van and smart work uniform wins them over)

Done all of the above.  Knocking on doors was the quickest way to get new customers.  Now I just rely on recommendations and the van/uniform!

I have and all ways will believe leaflets are best. I don't use yellow pages because it covers a large area and I don't want to drive eight or ten miles to do one house. For the whole of the coming year I will be delivering 300 leaflets a week. That takes about two and a half hours.
I only leaflet houses I like the look of and some roads will get two of even three drops in the year.
Door knocking gets more results initially but you get more time wasters and frankly I have never found it a pleasant experience. I would rather go out and drop leaflets.

Tosh gets new business by dressing in his wife's clothes and standing on street corners.

Only joking!

I advertise in the yellow pages at first i thought it would be pointless but lets give it ago!!

i was amazed with the feedback it really has made my business grow winning a few good comerical contracts but mostly domestic houses! last week and this week alone yellow pages has brought me around 17 new houses from standard 3bed semi to largish houses of around £20.00 and £25.00

First off, thanks for your answers and second... I LOVE THE ACCENTS! I like the terms "semi" "leaflet" "pounds", it is really interesting to here other terms from around the world.

I used to be in 4 yellow page books. I have found myself in situations where I got connected with other services and commercial accounts I would likely have not got anywhere else. It was also costing a small fortune, and in the slow winter I would receive no calls at all...but still had to pay big bucks.

As we reached 2006 and now with the internet taking over, I dropped all my ads and got more business focusing on the web for advertising.

I also love leaflets! I love that I can direct a precise message to a precise market I am after. I am a leaflet master  ;D

How many of you have a website? I realize that some of you may be in areas where the web is ineffective, but for those in busy cities, who has a site?

thanks

Knackered means extremely tired or exhausted (as in "I'm knackered!") or something is worn out or broken (as in "that washing machine is knackered").

It comes from the term "knacker's yard" from the 18th/19th century where working horses were taken when they'd died to be turned into glue and the like!

'Knackered' can also be used as a verb, for example:

'Malc, if I ever meet you, I'm gonna flipping knack you, you cheeky bustard'!
