Why is my TDS going up??
« on: January 30, 2007, 06:05:19 pm »
A couple of months ago myself and another local w/c that Im friendly with changed our resin from a colour change to  Rohm and Haas. His TDs is still at '0ppm'  But lately mine has been creeping up. Today it has now gone to '9ppm'.
The obvious thing is that my resin needs changing but my mate has a bigger round so his resin should expire before mine does. So I dont understand why my tds is rising and his isn't.
I phoned my mate up to find out what is different from his operation (bearing i mind we both have exactly the same pro5 system) and he told me that he uses up all of his water in his tank before filling up again whereas I would top up my water. Is this were my problem is? Should I empty my tank completely every now and then??
Ive just placed an order for a handheld TDS from Gardiners so once that arrives I will be able to check the TDS throughout the system and find were the problem lies..
Comments please.......................

do you both have the same TDS tap water?? if your tap water is harder than his then that explains your question. :)

Yeah, We have built in TDS metres in our system.

Just spoke to JM123 on the phone  ( My personal wfp Guru) and he suggested that after I have filled up I should drain about 5 litres of water the comes from the RO (and before the DI) as this water is normally very high TDS. After about 5litres the TDS should be alot lower.
Obviously if I drain this high TDS water, purer water will go into the tank and will be better for the lifespan of the DI.

This should sort the problem.
I had this happen a couple of weeks ago after changing resin the week before. Disconnecting the piping from the RO to the DI cannister and flushing the RO for 5 minutes brough my tds down from 12 to 01.

Hi Adrian - drain the first 5 litres BEFORE you fill up, its the first few litres the ro produces that are high.

once you have done that let the water go through the resin as normal until the tank is full.

Thanks for all the help guys, I drained the tank completely and refilled it up. this morning I drained 5 litres approx after RO and before DI and now my reading is 3ppm.

Ive ordered a TDS meter yesterday so once I get that I will check all stages of my water to see if I can get it down to 0. I will then compare it to your results. but I think if I completely empty the tank in future before filling it up it will help to get it down close to 0.

Thanks for the help. I saw your comment that I should drain the first 5 litres BEFORE I fill up but I think you are forgetting that I have a pro5, therefore I have only one tank (which is in the van) that my tap water goes into via a sediment filter, water softener and RO. Then before the water comes out via my brush it goes through the DI.

Are you thinking that I RO the tap water into a tank in my garage and then DI it before tramsferring it into my Vans tank??  ??? ???

no adrian, what I mean is this.  Say at night when you want start filling the tank,

1 - unplug the hose from the ro to di at the di end

2 - run the ro for 5ltrs before reattaching the hose to the di (without stopping the water)

hope thats the confusationing sorted :D

Will it have the same effect if i set the ro to flush for the first 5 liters or so? Also, what output should i be expecting at the moment with the cold temperatures. I have a 300 gpd RO but it takes about 11 hours to fill my 250 ltr tank. My tap TDS is 379ppm.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yes, setting the ro to flush will help, allow 5 mins for tds to come down
