Probably the first thing I'd advise doing, is take a basic CC course such as the Prochem one.
It'll teach you the basics and you'll have a much better idea what to look out for when buying a machine, chems etc.
Yes, you need insurance, both for public liability and product.
The only licence you need is a driving licence!

Sorry no ether way, why do you need a licence for WC, public liberty insurance would cover it?

i dont know why we need a licence but we cannot trade without one
i already have public liability insurance so possibly just need to get more added to it for carpet cleaning

Things could well be different in Scotland. Probably the best thing to do is contact the local council who will no doubt issue you with a licence, for a fee!
Good luck with the business, by the way. I'm not sure what things are like up your way but down here everyone and the cat's mother appears to offer carpet cleaning!
I think the key to success is to make your business appear unique to the customer.

thanks mate just done a quick survey in this area (ok i just looked in the yellow pages!)there are not many carpet cleaners in the area
as for being unique i will just offer the same quality of service as w/c maybe i should approach a c/c and ask for his local knowledge and just hope that he's not offended at a new upstart trying to steal business from him!
