Time purify water?
« on: June 16, 2004, 11:27:19 am »
Hi all,

COuld anyone help me please with regard to how long it takes to purify water using an 300 gpd filter system in a hard water area. I hope to be using Peters RO system.

I have decided to go for Peters system. I have heard lots of good things about it. Also, becase I live in a flat with stairs I need to be able to use the 25 litre containers to carry water down to the car. Anything bigger and I will have arms like an orang-utang  :-[ I fear other systems won't be as easy to transport. I have a garage for the troly and car but no water there and it is 300 meters from the flat so no chance of running a hose out there...

I can't get a van just yet as the landlord wont allow commercial vehicles overnight on the estate.  So eventually I will have to sell the car and buy a van. That way I can hide the van in the garage. Still twisting the wifes arm on that one ;)

I can't leave the flat because it is in London and we have a very nice 1 bedroom flat for the price of a Studio flat.

So for now I have to use the punto and carry several 25 litre barrels downstairs to the car every day. :o :-[ :-/ :'( :'( :'(

Anyways, please don't forget about the fill times for a 300 gpd system. I need to know roughly for about 250 litres.

Thanks Colin

The 300 gpd is the give away. 300 Gallons Per Day this equals over 1000 litres every 24 hrs. As long as your tap water pressuer is approx 65 psi your be fine.

A word of caution, 300gpd refers to AMERICAN gallons which are different from European gallons.

1 US Gallon = 3.785 litres
1 UK Gallon = 4.55 Litres

so a 300 GPD unit will produce around 1135 Litres per day.

But this is dependent on your tap water pressure.  If, for example, you have tap pressure greater than 60 psi, you will get greater production.  If less than 40 psi, much less water will be produced. (you can of course add a booster pump)

I would see if you can get a bulk discount with your osteopath, because that sound like hard work! I don't envy you.

I have a suggestion for you that might save your spine:

If your local tap water is not too hard (or even if it is), you could consider a DI only system.  These systems use only resin to produce water, and are very fast to fill up.  You could load your car with say 6 empty cannisters and use a customers outdoor tap to fill them with pure water.  This would take about 5 minutes to fill those cannisters.

The advantage is that you cold fill up anywhere there is an outdoor tap.  If you dont like the idea of using other peoples water, you could stop at a petrol station on the way and fill up using their water.

I rather do that than be carting heavy cannisters down stairs every day.  Also, there is a limit to how many you will fit in a punto, so you'll have to nip home a couple of times a day and do more of it.  With DI you can refill on-site.

DI systems are usually cheaper to buy, but a bit more expensive to run though.  This depends on your tap water TDS

I agree with phillp with this one, but to fill 5 containers takes about 15-20 minutes not 5 minutes.

Have you thought about a trailer for your car? because if you want to take enough water with you to last for 6 hours you will need around 13 water containers.

If you are buying your system from peter, send a water sample to him, and he will be able to test and advise you what it would cost you to run a soft water system.  ie: the amount of resin you will use to produce water, that way you will be able to find out what it cost you to clean someones house and how much you need to charge. ;D
