What are these coloured strands?
« on: November 15, 2006, 12:54:45 pm »
Hey peeps lol,
I carried out a quote this morning for a complete 3 bedroom bungalow, the carpets were tufted polypropylene pile with i'm not sure what backing kind of a thin rubber type but i did notice red, white and black strands running through. My question is what are these coloured strands i'm sure i have read somewhere that these strands are on most if not all polypropylene type carpet's, is that right? I was just hoping that the white strands weren't cotton as this could maybe cause a prob.

Cotton is a common ingredient in many types of carpet backing. Some carpet manufacturers put the red strands through the backing to aid in measurement when cutting the carpet to size although Axminster have a trade mark which is an extra strand at on end so make sure you are measuring from the correct one otherwise it will be too short :D

Hope this has helped!

if its a tufted carpet, then the backing will be stuck on with latex so it shouldnt really matter to you what it is, as you would have to really soak it to get the backing wet.
