More interestingly would be a pole as to why your wife wants to know.

Hi
Your survey is flawed as all you will find out is "The average age of CC who have voted on this topic who are cleanitup members".
Dave
PS Sorry i'll get me coat.

Art,
As your question reads you are asking us to predict what the average age of a CC is.
Might be better to ask how old we all are so us oldish boys don't get too confused
Cheers
Doug

Wished I was 44
From the people I have met on my travels I'd say the average age of carpet cleaners was 45, saying that though there are more in their 40's than 30's me being in my 50's I know many in their 60's
Yet to meet one in their 70's.

Started at the age of 39, now 41. Thought about starting up in my 20s but for some reason kept putting off. Wish I had done it sooner as it is one of the best decisions i have made as I am thoroughly enjoying this industry. Beats all other jobs that I have done for other people.
Nothing like being your own boss as they say.

why are the majority of carpet cleaners middle aged?
or is this a trend that runs through all self-employed people, that they don't get the urge to start up on their own until their 30's

I started when I was 28 and over the years I have found that the older I get the more the work seems comes my way. It may have something to do with folks having more confidence with older people, they tend to take more notice of what I have to say.
Sad part though, is now I’m 53 I do not have the energy to do as much as I did when I was in my 20’s. That is life though!

I think that Dave is right, i started when i was 22 and looked about 15 ! now i'm 35 and "experienced" and have fine tuned my cleaning and my patter i find custy's feel more confident in my abilities.
Have to say i was worrying about hitting middle age and then finding a decrease cos i look old and frail
but sounds like it should get better before it gets worse.

i too think Dave is right as i remember talking to nick Holman who said when he first started cleaning carpets when he was young it was hard for the customer to take him seriously. people do tend to trust the older man . on mike halidays comments the self employed carpet cleaner who starts in their later years do so for several reason by my observations. redundancy and a few bob to set themselves up. some are on the periphery industries and add the service like general cleaning companies. and the career changers who like me have grown tired of the business they was in for god knows how long but i was brought in by accident really as i was doing referrals to another cc and saw the lost revenue passing through my hands , ummed and arred for quite a while and slowly took the plunge because even though i set up a year ago i was thinking and doing research for about two years before jumping in

There are still quite a few cleaning technicians I know personally who are still operating in their sixties and even seventies.
About three years ago I met a colleague I hadn't seen for a few years, he was still on the wand at seventy-four... he may still be working to this day...There's 'young' Alan who posted on one of the forums just a few days ago who is in his early seventies
The secret is, the older you get you tend to work smarter not harder.
One or two others look to be in their nineties but are actually much much younger

Been looking at my passport Derek
I started - purely by accident at around 38, after hiring out a machine and finding most people wanted the job done for them.
At 62, I'm a bit of a wreck, but this has little to do with c/c and I'm still doing a bit, while on medication for blocked arteries.
If I can offload a Rotowash and Von Schrader I would be able to continue working, with one of the small, but powerful portables, or something else, which I'd love to trial.

At sixty-two Robbie you are still a spring chicken...you obviously haven't deducted the VAT .. that brings your age down to just over forty-four
Feel better now
