i have watched people using wfp they  seem to spill a lot of water on the ground . in the winter would this not freeze and become a danger to the public?

I use a numatic trigger on my pole, fantastic. I'm using less than half the water i used to & it gets over that very problem.

I had several days where for a couple of hours in the morning it was cold enough to freeze the watrer on the pavement (shops and so on)
Got caught out a couple of times, but found that with one of those Ikea type storage box's full of road salt I was sorted.
Sprayed very loosely and sparingly over any risky areas cured any problems with freezing.
you don't need to chuck down great clumps of the stuff.
I filled the box up from one of those roadside bins, was even chatting to a copper as I did so, told him exactly what it was for (public pavements) he didn't have a problem with it, lets face it, that's what it's there for.

Only filled the box up the once and barely used half of it.

If you get questioned, make sure you explain that it is for the public highway, paths, pavements etc.
If you tell em you want it to scatter on someones patio you'll be told to go buy your own! :-\

No way is it safe at all.

One minute you're walking along minding your own business, next you're sent sprawling or flat on your back after skidding on a mystery patch of gravel on the slopey high street. They're like little marbles.

..and yes I do speak from experience. >:(

I sometimes use a spray bottle with alcohol based solution in it instead (not to drink LOL)

Cobblers,
Road grit doesn't slip under your feet, totally and utterly disagree with you on that point, if it did the council would hardly use it themself on pavements would they?
Can you imagine all the compo claims from when the grit lorries go through a town centre, the grit doesn't just stay on the road you know, and what about when people cross the road?
Or cars breaking and then having an accident as a direct result of grit being thrown on the roads
Roger mentioned this last year, I experimented by deliberately trying to slip on it...and failed miserably :-\
The grid is angular, not round, you couldn't slip on it if you tried (I did and couldn't! ;))

Depends where you are but personally we use a bit road salt just to be precausious on the safe side! :D  :D
