Ban The Use of Ladders
« on: October 23, 2006, 09:42:21 pm »
I will have to vote no.

As long as they are used correctley i see no problem. I agree there should be a max height. If a wc decides trad is for him, ie Squeaky, who has the right to force wfp on him, its called "freedom of choice".

Another point is, i'm wfp but there are times i need ladders.

How about another option:-  'Impracticle to do so'?

If you want ladders banned, Think about the next time you need a new aerial or something painted etc, are you willing to pay the extra amount the tradesman will be passing on to you for scaffolding, and scaffolding is not cheap! Oh and another point, how would he get up the scaffolding without a ladder, (rocket boots)???
GETTING FED UP OF THE ANTI LADDER BRIGADE, get a life!

If there were as many people using wfp as use ladders, be it a window cleaner or a painter, or who ever, im sure there would be set problems the hse would be looking in to.

Lets just live and let live, and this forum is here to support window cleaners, wether they have a ladder, a pole or even rocket boots!!!

I vote no. There is nothing wrong with working with ladders if the are used correctly. There are many safety aids available and plenty of sources for advice. The HSE are not looking to ban ladders they are trying to reduce the number of injuries.

We all have to consider our own safety and that of others who may be affected by what we do or do not do.

We are not all fortunate enough to be in a position to own a wfp, but we still need to earn a living

WORK SAFE

I voted yes, but not because I think they should be banned, only because it then makes it easily understood by everyone.

Of course it isn't as easy as that though is it?

Ladders will never be banned outright, they are still an essential tool, but should not be used to work off, rather they should be used for access or as a last option when other options are impractical..........hang on.....isn't that exactly what the rules are at the moment ;D

Decorators are not supposed to work off ladders, scaffolding, towers or cherry pickers for them.
Like us though they flout the rules on domestic work.

I've watched them climb a ladder with a roller on an extension pole laden with paint, and then proceed to use both hands to reach as far as the pole will let them and they are 35ft up on a gable end....a complete and total no no...even though when as a decorator I did the same myself!

It isn't just window cleaners acting like muppets on ladders, it's also other trades too.

And painting a window off a ladder isn't allowed either!
