Washing scrim
« on: May 19, 2004, 03:16:02 am »
I have a question about how you wash your scrims

I just put mine in the washing machine no detergent and put them on a boil wash

The reason i ask is the wife keep telling me to put one of her persil tabs and softener in with it as it will be easier to use as it will be softer.

has anyone here washed there scrim with washing powder or the like and how do you find them to work with.

Stephen,
I had a wry smile on my face when I read your posting ;)
I have only had that problem whenever I took on a new guy, and they would go through no end of scrims in a day.

Generally I have never had a problem with scrims over sudsing in the washing machine, I wait till I have a full load for the machine, put a small amount of powder or whatever in the machine, and wash on a medium heat setting and on 'quick wash'.

Have experimented in the past with fabric softeners, but personally I prefer them un-softened.

But you don't need to put them on a boil wash whatever method you use..........well, unless you buy them unbleached, then I have always found a full boil wash for the first clean a necessity.

Think i will have a go at washing with detergent after reading Ian's post.

I use GG4 for cleaning anyway so should not really get many suds anyway

and i will try them on a medium heat quick wash like ian said and see how i get on with them.

I always thought you had to boil scrim thats what i have always done

We use 4 scrims, 2 washer sleves and 2 sill cloths each day.
I put emin the washer on a rince and spin small load cycle every night and wash em with a single tablet on a normal coulereds wash at the end of the week.  I don't use fabric conditioner, I find it makes the scrims a bit slimy when damp.

I wish i could get away with 4 scrims a days i tend to use about 8
and i use a damp one for the sill also.

I washed my scrims yesterday with one persil tab on a medium heat and normal spin.
Went out this morning to do just a couple of bungalows about 5 minutes away.

And i think it does make a slight bit of differance with the persil tab.

The scrim seems to be a bit softer so making detailing a bit quicker.

I think i will keep cleaning them like this now and only bother to boil my scrims when they are new

Paul, have a search on the boards for "dog ear" this cuts down detailing so much it's not true. If you've read about it and didn't try it, just take a slap on the wrist from me and then give it a go - you can thank me later.

Trust me, I'm a window cleaner!

I have tried to dog ear my one of my channels a few weeks ago but i think i must have bent the wrong side or i just done it completely wrong as it made no differance to me.
I bent the inside of the channel the short side in a few mil.
But after reading other post and seen it says it need to be bent towards the glass i can only assume i bent the wrong side.
Hopefully someone will be selling channels already dog eared before to long.
