Using old resin to prolong life of new resin
« on: October 22, 2006, 05:14:22 pm »
The tds out of my merlin averages 034 (even after new pre-filter:  very hard water area-430 tds )
There fore my 25 litre resin only lasts approx 8 weeks before moving up to 001.Then I need to change to new resin.

Have found that rather than throwing away the resin straight away,by connecting the new resin (in a second 25 litre  di vessel) after the spent resin, my 'new' resin is lasting longer.
After 7 weeks, the 'old' resin is reading 002 so the new resin is only having to handle 002 and not 034 and hopefully will last a lot longer than the 8 weeks.
It does pleasantly surprise me though that after 7 weeks the 'old' resin has only deteriorated to 002.
And by the way I happened to have a spare di vessel otherwise its £65 approx but might still be cost effective if had to buy one.
Dunno. Any thoughts?

Sounds good to me - especially if you already have the extra resin canister.  I don't know how true it is but I read somewhere that when old resin gets rather older, it can actually contaminate the water and INCREASE the TDS.  If true, you would need to check water before and after the first vessel as the resin got much older.  It may not be so though.

We have had this string before.

Using old resin works because of two factors, one being channelling, where the water finds route through the resin so it does not come in to contact with all the resin. The second being the make up of the resin, DI resin is usually 60/40, if you water has more or less positive or negatively charged ions then the resins  + or - beads will not all be used up, but using it with another container of new resin then enables it to use its spare capacity.

That's the way I always do it. I am DI only and am still on my 3rd bag of resin since I started WFP 14 months ago. My tap water is about 50 TDS. Just be carefull not to let the resin in your 1st container get higher than the tds of the water going into it. Dai

Agree with Steve, good way of inreasing your life of resin.

Another little tip, when your TDS rises open your vessel and you will often
find that through time there is still space to put in more resin. I just add a
couple of more scoops, give the vessel a shake and TDS back down to 000.
This lasts me for a couple of more weeks.

I find my resin tends to last longer this way. However on one ocassion did
not work, do not know why though.

DA,

Try this next time. Backwash the resin for a few mins. As you noticed the resin compacts, as quick back wash will de-compact the resin and move it about preventing channelling.

  Steve,

Thanks, but how do you do a back wash in a DI vessel.

Spot on!!!!!
I use up to 3 di cannisters on the go to fully use my resin and throw it away when the tds of the 1st is higher than the O/Tap outlet.

i started using two di vessels in sequence 18 months ago (di only system) and prolonged the life of the new resin no end. then i swithed from using purolite resin to dowex and this made a massive difference, with these two changes in my set-up i doubled the life of my filter. i actualy made records of my filter life for 12 months before and 12 months after so i know this is accurate and not just wishful thinking. my tds tap water is 105.
