Help cleaning windows
« on: October 06, 2006, 06:50:05 pm »
Hi

I have a problem with cleaning windows high up, I cannot reach the very top windows when i put the ladder just under the window sill, I wont stand on the tiles for obvious reasons so how is it possible to clean the very top windows traditionally? I'm about 6ft tall and it may look it from the picture that they are not that tall but i even have to use the ladder to clean the top of the ground floor windows.

How would you clean these windows traditionally?

Its the house with the green door in the middle of the picture just in case anyone isnt sure and not the windows on the left.

Rest the ladder on the gutter and use a pole.

Can you foot the ladder into the wall, ladders on wall just below cill or on cill, climb up & then reach them from there. The ladder wont slip if the wall is footing it.

Make yourself a 12"-24" extention to your squeegy I made one from an extending paint roller from B&Q Just cut it and  tape a cone to it and Just swap your applicator and squeegy as you need to.

hi,

it looks like you can put your ladder just above top windows if so its easy to reach from there using both hands either side of the ladder.

thats what i would do.

What we used in the days before we used wfp was a bit of 4 by 2 which was about (I think) 8ft long which was straped across the top of the ladder with 2 proper ratchet ties.

It made the ladder a bit arkward to put up but not impossible and the wood went across the whole window resting against the bricks either side of and half way up the window.

I don't know if that's acceptable in today's health and safety conscious way of doing things but that's how we done it for some jobs with the same problem.

Maybe I shouldn't have posted this.  ???

Use an 'A' Ladder and rest it on the front corner in the middle of the two panes, easy!

Mark

Use a 'Ladder Stay' on or just under the cill, and you will be able to work a few rungs higher...safely, they cost about £25 ? Well worth it.

Hi,

Difficult with an open ended diy ladder.  As Eacyclean says a doube pointer would make this job easy by resting it on the frame corners.  I remember having this problem when I started with an open ender ladder. With a pointer you are always at least level  with the window.

Why?
Are you planning on shifting your weight from side to side as you work?

I've put my ladder against gutters for years and never had it budge sideways.

Utter nonsense.

Been thinking about this one.

1. Long Term:
If your round is like these - awkward to access - consider WFP

Not a usefull answer if you need to do them Mon!!

2. Ring Cleantech (01563550450) Get your Credit or Debit card ready!. Option 1 Traditional and order:

1 x Cleantech 3 x 2mtr aluminium extender pole about £30
1 x Ettore Backflip 4 ways to use it                      about £30
or a Unger Visa Versa   2 ways to use it              about £17
1 x fixy clamp                                                        about £16

Then you can stand on the pavement put the backflip or Visa Versa on the pole.
Wash the window with the washer side.  Turn over and squeegee with the flip side.  Then put the fixiclamp on the pole, clamp in your scrim and detail if neccessary. Then change to sill cloth and wipe the sill.

Iff you ring Cleantech first thin Mon you will probably recieve your gear Tue and be able to do the job Wed.

Well said David.

Poleman doesn't know what he's on about again.... ::)

Read below
and notice someone had already said the same and you never said a word.
This is sort of crap I had to put up with yesterday.
Try having a pop at someone else.

Rest the ladder on the gutter and use a pole.

Resting ladders against guttering is unsafe.  I do it, but I wouldn't advise anyone else to do it.

This sounds like the most sensible and safe option I've read in this post.

I read this somwhere and i dont know if its good advice or bad as i have not done it but that little bit of your ladder thats sticking out in the picture if you use an industrial glue and stick some rubber on the underside of the top section then it would increase the friction if you were to rest it against something slippery the down side of this is you will not be able to clost the ladder all the way again

Thanks David,

I'm going to order one of those Unger Visa Versa's and a pole on monday so i can reach the higher windows, I've not got a couple of jobs because i cant reach the higher windows so i knew i need to find a way to do them asap!.

Thanks everyone else for your replies, I will go to WFP eventually but without the £££ i cant so this should be a solution for now :)

Mark.
