How much am i charging?
« on: August 28, 2006, 01:51:31 pm »
How much am i charging ???

At the moment i charge by the room size, and i am thinking of changing to pricing by the square foot.
So im just trying to work out what im roughly charging at the minute as iv never measured a room yet.

I think im right in saying a average lounge is about 200 square foot. Would you agree?

What about average, double bedroom, single bedroom, hall, landing?

My prices are

Through lounge £60
Lounge £38
Diner £38
Double bedroom £38
Single bedroom £35
Hall £20
Stairs £20
Landing £20

Anyone got a rough idea what this equates to as a square foot charge?

Thanks
Dan

In my opinion, for what it's worth, your prices are barmy. How can you quote a landing or hall at the same cost as stairs, which will, in many cases, take 3-5 times the time and effort

Hi Red

Your rate works out to 30p a sq ft (200sq ft x .30 = £60).  A bit cheap but if your happy with it, stick with it!  ;D

Hope this helps

p.s. gota agree with Angie, stairs take longer and shouldd be priced accordingly.

These prices along with upholstery at £20 a seat, earn me a very consistent £40 a hour
There are jobs iv made as little as £20 a hour and others iv managed £80 but on average througout the working day i manage around £40 a hour day in day out.

I would like to increase this hourly rate a bit though if possible, and i think it will be easier to get better prices if i measure up first.

Formula6, (good to chat with you the other day) do you do hard floors? if so iv got a job i can put your way.
200sq ft is a average lounge isn't it? if so i only charge £38 for that so its gona be less than 30p a foot, but then i charge the same for a regular size bedroom and there normally smaller than the lounge.

Angela, I find hall, stairs, and landing all take me the same time (around 1/2 hour) so a typical h/s/l takes me a hour and a half, and earns me £60. Which is bang on my hourly target of £40.

Im trying to work out what i charge on average, just working it out by the lounge wont give me a true figure, because i know i earn more on bedrooms and landings etc.

Sorry Red, I must of had one too many last night!. Your rate for your lounge (12x12) @ £38.00 is of course .19p a sq ft. Which is what I was trying to post! .19 is low but then you are reasonably new to the industry. IMO slowly increase them each year, so by year 5 say, you wshould be charging a decent rate for your services. I personally think your on the right track, its no good trying to charge top wack until you are established ;)

Unfortunately I'm not into hard flooring yet. Soz. I would like to eventually though. Good to put a name to a face and bump into 1 or 2 people again! Did you go for the lease TM?

if you  are earning £40 an hour constantly day in day out then don't let anyone say that's a bad thing and that you need to charge more. i got a glimpse of you at woodbridge as i could not get to you to speak to as you was mobbed by your fan club like some sort of pop star !! but i get the impression you are still quite young . £40 and hour is a good rate for someone your age and who has just entered the industry. why people knock it is beyond me. all i can say is well done mate and i am sure you will be very successful doing what you are doing

I charge the same...however...I look at the job, and work out roughly how long it would take, and work it out at £40 an hour...and hey presto...youve got your quote....there are fixed rates too, of course......certain ethnic groups get quoted at £70 an hour....as they are so awkward.

      12x12 = 144 sqft  £38.00 divided by 144 = 0.2638888 pence

      15x12 = 180 sqft £38.00 divided by 180 = 0.2111111 p
pence

depends what you want to call an average lounge,is there an industry standard?

26p per sq ft, how does anyone make any money.

My charge is £2.50 sq mtr for carpets (domestic) and commercial £4.70 sq mtr.

3pc suite always £150.

Yes I get people saying im expensive, but I just explain my thorough method and tell them to try a cheaper firm with inferior machinery.

I used to charge these silly prices but all I was doing was working flat out all day 6 days a weeks to make a wage. Now Im working 5 days a week and earning twice that amount.

Plus when I go to work Im alot happier knowing that Ive charged a decent amount instead of a £30 here £39 there quote.

Steven,

You sure you've got that the right way around!!   :-\  £2.50 sq mtr is 26.91 pence per foot.

Don't you mean £4.70 domestic and £2.50 commercial.

If you want to do the maths here is a free metric converter.

I have one of those ultra-sonic tape measures (With built in laser pointer!) Was about £20 from B&Q as I remember.

It impresses clients "Ooh! He measured my rooms with a laser beam" and has the added benefit that it calculates areas automatically.

Peter (carpet clean)
Hi mate, caught a glimpse of you there to, sorry didnt get a chance to chat, i ended up leaving early and probably missing quite a bit as i got a call from my other half, that her car had broke down half way through the day >:(

I guess taking £40 a hour and earning £40 a hour are completly different things, as im taking a fair bit but never seem to have anything left for myself :(

£354 today ;D but straight in bank for bills >:( Nearly ended up with £439.50 would have been my best day yet but the clean and protect i had booked in decided to change to just a clean :o

Formula6, im still trying for the t/m been turned down by Woodbridges finance company, but another company reckon they will do it for me so iv just faxed them some docs today, should be hearing back tomorrow. (fingers crossed)

Somthing iv found out wich may help anyone looking to buy a t/m is that finance companys dont like to lease you a t/m unless you own the van its going in outright, just in case the van gets repossed with there machine in the back.

Glad to see you are doing okay. At what point did you decide to go in for a tm? and do you think they will be the norm eventually?

Without starting yet another heated debate on porty v tm, you will see the difference. Have you thought about a secondhand unit as they can be picked up for a reasonable price.

Leasing is okay but i would rather own outright. Think of the possible quiet times ahead.

I hope you get the TM, it will make your life easier I'm sure. You'll have to let me know how it goes!

Do you know what, I was reading back on the other post of yours about pricing, I have seriously lost the plot. For some reason I had 200sq ft in my head (cos you mentioned it I suppose) instead of obviously knowing that a 12x12 is 144! so my pence per foot was wrong again!! JEEZ I'm having a bad week :-\ The other chap was quite correct .26p a sq ft was your lounge price.

Glad I got that off my chest :P
