Marketing

Many years ago I used to work for Hillary's blinds.

At the time their business format provided me with an insight to running a successful business.

As a company they would budget a minimum of 10% of their gross turnover on advertising - turnover at the time was about £63million per year - therefore re-investing £6-£7million pounds per year spent on advertising - mostly local free paper advertising and leaflets.

Today sitting at home I had a multi leaflet drop thru my door - Homebase - Wicks - DFS - Hillarys - MFI - local decorator - curry house - pizza - etc - etc.

Before I put all in the bin I stopped and it made me think about marketing - okay some of these companies have plenty of money - yet not one of these companies would waste a penny on useless forms of advertising - It's all a question of consistency and belief - eveyone knows some of these name brands - yet they still continue to spend on advertising - even during summer holidays - when it is quite - because when customers need their products/services this continual form of advertising eventually pays off.

But have you noticed that these days Hillarys have had to resort to bait and switch to get leads.

Their Main promotions are 3 verticals for £99 in colours nobody wants, so  the idea is then to switch you.

I think you will find their marketing cost is between 15 and 25% in some areas.

10% gross!

Interesting to see what percentage we all spend? I hate the advertising aspect as we all know its hit and miss but if we don't do it we sit here writing rubbish lol!!
