Go cardless and direct debit question
« on: Today at 07:25:42 am »
Hi All,

I’m being forced by my accountant to move into the 21st century…… kind of.

With the new accounting rules coming into play in 2026 for self assessment, and the need for your accountant to have access to software, plus paying tax bill every 3 months, I now need to GET accountant software compared to my spreadsheets just now.

I’m planning on trying to move over to direct debit or atleast offering it as my main payment method. I feel like with the changes I’m having to implement to my book keeping I might aswell implement another.

Currently it takes me a fair bit of time each morning marking of dozens of payments to update my spreadsheets. One click GC direct debit would be nice.

I’m going to give squeegee a go for the client management and GC integration.

Quick question for direct debit users…..

When you receive money from go cardless, how does that process work? Is it held into a go cardless account, and then you withdraw it your bank account?

Does it come into your bank account in one lump sum? Or individual payments?

I’m trying to factor in the fees, and at the moment my business account charges me 0.35p for each debit that comes in.

If I receive say £300 in one lump sum, then I still only get charged 0.35p. Whereas now I’m being charged 0.35p for each individual customer.

Hope that makes sense?

Thanks for any help guys.

Go cardless, each customer has there own account and payment is made to your bank account.

So if you raise a invoice for Mrs Jones roughly 7 days later go cardless emails you saying you have a payment from Mrs Jones £30.

Thanks Roy! Good to know. Looks like I will still get hit with individual bank charges with each customer too.

Is it simple enough to change your bank account details on go cardless? Or does each customer need to sign a new mandate?

I might look into a less expensive business account. It’s just a faff to give everyone new details.

Change your bank, Barclays don’t and many other don’t charge for receiving or making transfers.
Why introduce GC who make you wait a week for your money and take a fee.
I had 30 on GC and now it’s just 3.
Just give your customers your new bank details and ask them to transfer.

Change bank. I changed my business account from RBS to Santander years ago as RBS were charging for each transaction, Santander is £7.50 per month unlimited transactions.
