I’ve not brought a new one in a while but have had different colours didn’t see any difference myself. There is a chemical version though. I have the service kits ok eBay and they work well for me.

Different manufacturing batches were made in different colours.  Had there been more reported failures with say red coloured Univalves, then it would be easier to identify a problem with that batch. So Steve would know the date when, say, all the black ones were made.

So if someone said they got a black one from him 3 months ago, and it failed, he would know he sold that batch 4 years ago and hence that Univalve would be much older than his customer claimed and not be under warranty.

In the power tool industry, manufacturing date codes were extensively used, not only on the original tool, but also on each major component. This helped the German factory back then to identify any product that had developed a manufacturing fault. It also was a way we could identify if a customer was trying to scam us by swapping old parts from a failed power tool into the new one and sending it back for a full refund.

Had one fail with me in 6 years. Took it apart and fitted the stainless steel springs, seals and bought good silicon to coat it and still working fine.

I still have the original one of the first batch on my pole. The only thing I have done is glued the small o ring onto the valve head as it came off and silicone grease the large o ring.

Yes the good old days. There comes a point when the manufacturer sees reduced demand because they are built to last. Soon they realise they need to increase sales so they fit parts that will fail. I saw this when I was doing the gas course. They changed the copper pipes to rubber and the brass valves to plastic. After some time the rubber pipes clogged up and the plastic valves became brittle and broke. Sales of these parts went through the roof.

I have a couple old univalves that still work then I had the stupid idea of getting new ones thinking best replace before they start playing up.  Unfortunately I've found the new ones nowhere near as good. 😭
Within about 2 months the valve is temperamental when trying to shut it off.  So frustrating.

My plan is to dig out the old ones and get some silicone grease in there.

Anyone recommend where I can buy the grease I need?

Thanks

The grease I bought in April 2020 was from GAPS. 30ml and still loads left in the spares/repairs box. Just posted to show prices of Membranes 5 years ago.

Univalve service kits available from Rootek. They include opening tool, stainless spring, O rings and silicon grease. IMO, they make the unit operate better than new and the springs last forever! I buy 3 x kits for £20.👍
