I've been given a  2 man webasto 9kw diesel heater (xline) to try before I buy at a good price.

Unfortunately it was disconnected without the controller. Doesn't look like it's had much of a life at all.

Anyway is there anyone out there who has this system that can help me with finding out which wires go where please?

I have 3 main wires. Red, Brown and Black.
The Brown and Black have been connected up to much thinner wires with different colours and it's not obvious what's what 😭 (brown to these thinner wires : redx2, black, red/black. )
(Black to green&white, brown X2 , white)

All I want to do is try fire it up to see if it works really.

Any help much appreciated 🙏 👍

The Thermo 90 S/ST and the Themo Pro 90 have the same wiring harness and are connected up the same way.

This is how my Streamline Thermo 2 wiring was connected. The heater had a simple from control panel/box which had an on/off switch and a green LED light. When the switch was switched on the green LED would light up and stay lit. If there was a fault then the green LED would/does flash.

There was also a Spring Controller Frostat wired in as well and have added that info. But this frostat isn't necessary to test the unit. The Frostat controller can be confusing to set up.

My suggestion is to get onto Google and ask for an operator's manual for your specific Webasto furnace. There is a wiring diagram included, but as there are a number you can easily get confused. The thing to remember is that these are designed as engine preheaters for countries where the temperatures are well below freezing. They aren't designed for heating window cleaner's water.

I found a photo I took of the back of the control box.

On the left is the on/off switch. on the right is the LED with that green housing. If you enlarge the picture, it will make it easier to follow.

The cable on the right is from the heater and the cable to the left goes off to the power supply. The blue cable goes to the frostat which needs to be connected to battery positive if the frostat isn't included.

Streamline chopped all the unwanted wires off inside the heat shrink.

It looks like the on/off switch is coming off the neutral side going by your pic but maybe I'm not looking at it quite right. 🤔

Also for some reason the terminal for frost stat on the main plug at burner is cut off very short and I can make out it was a red and black wire. It looks like somehow it was working without a positive feed on that.

Anyway I have a much better idea of things now thanks to you ☺️

I bought this Heatwave as spares or repairs probably 12 or more years ago.

I remember taking the old frostat out of the system as the wiring was a mess. I couldn't get the boiler to fire up. I very tentatively connected that blue cable to power as well and it all fired up after that.

I can still distinctly remember that feeling of dread making a mistake and destroying the boilers electronics. It was one of the impactful memories I will remember until I die.

All I can say is that this was my experience. Maybe yours was connected up differently.

I have removed that box and added the controls into a separate enclosure. I have connected everything the exact same way and it works fine. I don't have a Spring Frostat, but I have a 12v digital temperature controller that will kick the heater on when the temperature inside the cabinet drops to 3 degrees C.

I have 2 flexible heater hoses to and from my boiler. I use 2 C clamps with a small piece of wood to clamp the hoses closed near each nipple on the heater. Doing this saves me loosing all the coolant. Then disconnect the fuel hose and finally the electrical harness plug.
You need to be careful removing this plug as it has a lock pin to secure it. As my harness is reasonably long, I found it easier to remove the harness plug with the heater out. Then unplug the fuel pump cable.

You can work this way for a few days with cold water while the heater is being serviced. Honestly, having a replacement boiler is a waste of money IMHO.

You have to be careful as well. If Grippatank sold you an older Webasto Thermo 90S or ST, (which may have been the current model back then), then the fuel pump isn't compatible with the current Thermo Pro 90 according to Webasto. You will need to look at the plate on your boiler to see what you have been sold.

Not every year. I have to take it to Glenrothes now and that takes about 2hrs to get there. My mate has his own garage and I reckon the 2 of us  will be able to do it, if not then we know a guy who does it but I need to deliver it and its not that far.
My problem now is not money, my problem is time. After the storm I'm inundated with work (fences & roofs). I now do my own van service and now my system service. The only thing I don't do is the boiler so it makes sense to do that at the same time as I service the system. I'm away back out now to finish a fence post that I had to drill out. Its a windy customer of mine and I do all her maintenance because she lives in a big house.
I wouldn't get the work without doing her windows so that's the reason I have over 100 windy customers. Both work in tandem with each other and it gives me a bit of variety. Window cleaning has transformed my handyman business but I need a bigger house or I'm going to rent a container soon.
