Not a Good Start to the New Year
« on: January 03, 2025, 07:48:55 pm »
My van has an oil leak and it's losing coolant. Dropped off at the garage hoping to be told it was the head gasket. Got a phone call to tell me it's an oil leak from the turbo and the water pump has gone. Cost = £1700

Happy fecking New Year everyone.

Sounds steep doesn't it. £250 for a turbo, £100 for pump and cam belt. Say 8 hours at £75 an hour comes to £1070.

I might phone around.

That’s quite cheap most average turbos are £1500-2000 , Audi bi turbo costs 8 k plus vat and fitting  and the Porsche is around  16k plus fitting  😉

How old is the van and what make and mileage?
It's a game of three halves!

I've had worst starts to a new year.....🤣

8 years ago my oil pump went and seized my engine on my first day back in January

I decided there and then I wouldn't mess about buying old vans anymore and leased a brand new one. It was on my drive within 3 weeks.
price higher/work harder!

For what my advice is worth
Find out how much the van is worth
Before starting repairs
My combo blew its gearbox and injectors  and driveshaft cost 3k  a week before Xmas
it was worth 1500 when I sold it six months later after another 2k on repairs
Would have made more sense to have left it at the side of the road

If it is due a cambelt change that will be a sizeable chunk of the bill anyway.

I have a 2006 dispatch with 150k, no major issues so far (It has  had 2 new timing belts, changed every 9 years)

Is it 1.6 or 2.0 dispatch?

It's a 2.0. I had a 1.6 before, it had no pulling power. It had a cam belt when the water pump went a few years ago. Never mind, I won't have to worry about getting that fixed in the future.

It's only money.

Had a couple of major breakdowns, its gutting, ring your local garage yeh we can do it a weeks time,  then a few days doing the repair. I rented a van last time but I always feel much more secure having another vehicle to turn to. Even if its an old car to throw barrels and a backpack in if you have space you can leave it uninsured and sorned. I had an old car but had to get rid of it as no space to leave it off road.

I got another van a month ago but as yet havent parted with my old one, i keep thinking if this blows up im stuffed. If i do get rid of it i will likely get something else as a back up.

Not always more economicla buying a new one though, they can go wrong also and when they do they are usually much more expensive to repair than an old one...plus the depreciation etc. Better with a couple of 3k vans than a 30k one imo.
