Had a couple of major breakdowns, its gutting, ring your local garage yeh we can do it a weeks time, then a few days doing the repair. I rented a van last time but I always feel much more secure having another vehicle to turn to. Even if its an old car to throw barrels and a backpack in if you have space you can leave it uninsured and sorned. I had an old car but had to get rid of it as no space to leave it off road.
I got another van a month ago but as yet havent parted with my old one, i keep thinking if this blows up im stuffed. If i do get rid of it i will likely get something else as a back up.
Not always more economicla buying a new one though, they can go wrong also and when they do they are usually much more expensive to repair than an old one...plus the depreciation etc. Better with a couple of 3k vans than a 30k one imo.
