Bizarre Gutter Job
« on: December 13, 2024, 01:57:31 pm »
Got asked to trim the tiles going into a gutter today. Had to take 50mm off the tiles because they couldn't get them cleaned out. Did it with a battery 9" stihl saw and it took 30mins and put the stuff in a bucket off my ladder limb. If was just the front and next year I have the back to do. £60 and a tenner tip so another job I will be offering. 👍

Absolutely, a roofer would probably have been treble that if not more. One roofer I rang lately had a minimum call out charge of £200  :o.  I get why they can charge a premium, it's their lives on the line up there, why would you value your own at so much less. Just not worth it.

Driving to job, pricing the job, ladders off van, tools out, carrying out the job, packing away……

No chance the above is 30 minutes. Your non window cleaning stories are smelling more and more like  🐂💩 Michael.

I see there's a lot of them slating you MIchael (no pun intended) . I'm on your side though, tile trimming is a potential market to be tapped into. They just don't see it. More fool them.

I have mine after the football tomorrow. I’m only allowed one take out a week.

Most roof tiles have a drip edge at the end. When you cut the tile back, you cut the drip edge off. I hope that doesn't cause other rot problems you will get blamed for. Not something I would get involved with offering.

6 years in Scottish and still not full with window cleaning which you have said before is the most profitable work you can do?
Why?
You should NOT have cut those roof tiles. If you knew what you were doing you would have known that you can put spacers behind the gutter brackets to bring the gutters out a bit.
All faff though. You know you can earn more just cleaning crap off glass.
I did property maintenance for years and as one of the above posts quite rightly said once you’ve factored in the materials, quoting and rubbish removal etc the hourly rate becomes more of an illusion.
Fill the van up with water and off you go. Regular repeat custom. Pretty much work in any weather. It really doesn’t get any easier.
I’ve been reading your posts for quite a while now and I still can’t make my mind up if you’re a wind up or not!

I don't get why you guys get so angry with him!

It's  entirely up to him whether he wants to offer all these add on jobs as well as the window cleaning that most of us wouldn't dream of taking on.

He will be an incredible asset to his local community

Odd job men are worth their weight in gold to some folk.

I used to do all sorts when I was younger building up my round....painting fences, fixing gutters, putting up xmas lights for elderly customers,etc,etc...

I simply don't offer these services anymore because I have plenty of window work to clean and I'm in my 50s now so don't want to do any ladder work unless it's for family or friends...
price higher/work harder!

And if you did Daz

Would you be making a thread about every one of these jobs on a forum - I doubt it.

I think most of us at some time have done different works - but it's hardly earth shattering and there seems to be a "how clever am I" with it - when in fact it's quite boring and when you look at the money involved just not worth the effort involved

I have a commercial gutter clear 3 storey flats - flat roof with 6 hoppers - it's £650 every 6 months - if we are unlucky the guys are there 30 mins - normally it's 15 mins  -  but I don't post a thread about it

You’re right he will be an asset to the community. Maybe not an ‘incredible asset’! I think that’s stretching it a little bit!
I don’t know about anyone else of course but I’m certainly not ‘angry’!
Amused is probably nearer the mark. Especially with the latest that he can’t work in minus 2 even with the mythical hot water.
And has been said many many times before it’s a window cleaning forum not odd job Bob land!

He said 2c not -2c. The bloke has rhino skin, bigs himself up, thinks he's the dog's, tries to brag about earnings (we all earn more than him)... he's boring. But I like reading his stories 😂
