Update
Camshaft is shot
So looks like timing belt kit needed (incl water pump )
So £1800 including labour
If valves are bent it's gonna be £2500
Van is worth £6000 ish, that's running properly, so l need to get it sorted.
Ah well, I've learnt something anyway.

Did this happen because you didn't change the cambelt(or camchain) at the recommended interval?

My missus connect has done over 80k...I think she needs to get it done

Mines the same age but has only done 25k

Take no notice of recommendations.
Change water pump, timing belt etc on a ford connect like mine every 40,000 miles
That's what my mechanic said.
I'm clueless, so I take advice

I phoned my local garage yesterday. He said no need to change the cam chain at all on our connects(me and the missus have the same 1.5 euro 6 engine). No wet belt. He said they will last the lifespan of the vehicle.

Only time he said it needs changing is if  there's warning signs(rough idle and slightly misfiring engine)🙂👍
price higher/work harder!

That's what I was told every time I had it serviced which was once a year every 8,000 miles
Until the timing belt slipped and caused all the damage I have now
Your choice Daz, but I know what I'm doing every 40.000 miles if I have a connect again

But is it a belt or chain?

My transit custom is on the same chain at 130,000 miles and still no signs of issues. I will be replacing it soon though, even though it’s not actually necessary.

Belts are different, they NEED changing.

I was told it's not the belt of chain that goes, its the idlers and pulleys. On the small Citroen/Peugeot vans that taxi drivers use were going all the time and it was a chain. There was a problem with them and it cost the manufacturer a fortune fixing them under warranty. In the end, we are better looking after our vans because its our livelihood.

If it’s chain i would be changing it before 100k miles just for peace of mind sprockets can chip  teeth and wear I personally wouldn’t take any advice from ford main dealer

Lets think about the cam belt of chain in a logical way. Its like the heart in our body and creates the motion so its getting hammered all the time the engine is on. Folk get pretty upset when it breaks because it costs a fair bit of money. That's the reason we have got to take care of the timing system and spend money renewing it. That's the way I see it but you can be lucky and it doesn't malfunction. fwiw

I agree, Ford main dealers are the last people I'd trust
I got ripped off by my local dealer for £90 ish once
Got it back when I cleaned their windows and cladding and charged em £750.00
Karma 🤣🤣🤣

That sounds a bit steep! I was quoted £650 for new cambelt and water pump including labour
price higher/work harder!
