Update

Garage has started examining the engine.
Report last night from them Said that it's a timing issue that is causing compression problems
With my limited mechanical knowledge I don't know whether that's a positive prognosis so far or not 🤔
I would guess the timing belt has slipped a notch or 2 so the valve timing is out. Hopefully it's not damaged the valves or rotated a cam lobe.
Fingers crossed they can put a new timing belt & maybe water pump on and time it correctly and you could be OK.

As far as I'm aware my 17 reg transit connect is a wet belt, whatever that means
I have next to zero knowledge of engines as you may have well

Is it expensive to fix that's the ,$164,000 question?

Need to be stripped down to see what needs replaced. By the sound of it could be less than a grand but I will ask my mate who knows all about connects as he has fixed plenty of them.

When is the belt due to be changed?
On my old dispatch it is every 100k or 10 years, I have it done a year early so it has been changed twice now.

It's never been changed, I was informed at about 85,000 miles That mine didn't need changing when I had it serviced as it was a chain not a belt
Sounds like I was misinformed eh!!!

If a vans used for short journeys most of the time the interval change time is halved.

I should know the £££££ damage any day now
Apparently the garage who is doing the work are well thought of by many locals, so hopefully they are not going to try rip me off.
These replies  have helped, as has many bits of advice I've received from this forum since I joined
Cheers folks

Camshaft is shot
So looks like timing belt kit needed (incl water pump )
So £1800 including labour
If valves are bent it's gonna be £2500
Van is worth £6000 ish, that's running properly, so l need to get it sorted.
Ah well, I've learnt something anyway.

Did this happen because you didn't change the cambelt(or camchain) at the recommended interval?

My missus connect has done over 80k...I think she needs to get it done

Mines the same age but has only done 25k
price higher/work harder!

The manufacturers instructions are only for guidance and not wrote in stone. I get my belt, ancillaries and water pump done every 6 years no matter how many miles I have done. If I have done over 40k miles then I will get it done sooner. I am beginning to do most of the stuff myself because my mate is so busy and I can do it at his garage with his ramps. Did 4 ball joints in 2 days at my garage and a garage would have charged a grand plus parts so it makes sense taking 2 days off.

It would be worth it for us to think about going on a online mechanic course to find out the basics. I can service my van for £100 and it only takes 2hrs and that's including a litre of Catclean and going for a 30min drive down the motorway. It is only thinners and cleans the fuel and exhaust system and makes your engine run better and last longer. My mate then takes it for an MOT and it always passes the emission test.

Only thing now is the amount of tools I have, I could run my own garage the amount I have added to my collection. I see tools as assets and always try and buy the best so they will last.

I first just got the belt changed to save money till my mate the mechanic told me the belt doesn't break. He said what happens is the accessories break and that throws the belt out. That's the reason you need to buy the kit and change the lot. A bit like when we used to just change the clutch plate and then sell the car. If a mechanic is taking the time to change the clutch then he needs to remove propshaft, Bell housing and other stuff then you would change the Flywheel, clutch plate and pressure plate because you are in there anyway. My new flywheel and clutch set cost me £750 but it will last now until the van gets scrapped.

I would absolutely not go on any mechanic course or do anything to a vehicle apart from the obvious(check oil, water, top up washer fluid).I would change a tyre but most cars don't have a spare anymore!😂

I wouldn't even change engine oil as it's a horrible,dirty job
price higher/work harder!

Your right, must be the dirtiest job out there bar a coal miner. I did some work on my van on Friday and I manage to get dirt on my hair. That's another reason they get paid well.

Take no notice of recommendations.
Change water pump, timing belt etc on a ford connect like mine every 40,000 miles
That's what my mechanic said.
I'm clueless, so I take advice

I believe an official kit from ford's is £280
Plus Labour at garage of your choice

That's a timing belt, not chain
