Just got home today to see a letter from the water company we are a fitting water meter to your property I've been filling my tank 14 years not had to worry about it, this time of year it takes about 6hrs to fill I think the meter will finish me like that how to people go about it.
My tds is about 320 so can't just put it through resin.
Any advice

Still very affordable compared to buying your water, apply for a non return to sewer allowance from water company and carry on as normal. It's a business expense so offset your water bill against your tax.

I had to have meter fitted when I moved house 16 years ago. It was nowhere near as bad as I expected. You should be able to get a refund on water not returned to drain if you calculate how much water you produce as pure - sewage abatement.

That would only work if meter fitted inside your property boundary. Mine is fitted in the footpath outside where the supply pipe Tees off jrom the main.

That is correct, no chance of stopping them if it’s in the street

Did they say they're going to bill you via the meter or just informing you that a meter is being fitted. ? They inform you because they have to turn the supply off  to fit it. Some companies like Anglian Water used to have what they referred to as extended meter programs where the whole neighbourhood would have to have a meter fitted so as they can catch new occupiers as they move in (it also helps with leak detection) but didn't force existing customers on rateable values to change over if they objected. I have a meter fitted but pay on the RV. I am going back a while as i havn't worked there for 20 yrs.

I fitted a sub meter to my garage tap where I fill my van,when the bill comes I take a reading from southern waters meter then a reading from my sub meter,then phone southern water and give them both readings they then calculate how much water has not sent been  to sewer and then credit me the difference.
I put the waste water from my ro either in my pond or on the garden hence no return to drain
Well worth doing and will save you a few hundred quid a year

I don’t understand. Why not just pay for the water you use? Same as any other expense?

I only do about 3 days a week or roughly 11 days a month so around 5000/5500  litres per month through a RO  so about 11000 litres in total.

That’s not as bad as I was expecting, my unmetered water bill is £49 going up to £55 a month .

How much do you guys put down for washing cloths and workclothes per year?I put £60 a year which I think is the most you can claim for.

That’s unusual most are quarterly mine have always been that perhaps different water authorities do things differently?.
