Unfortunately this is a minefield; you can either have a quiet life or delve yourself into a bucket of poo.
Without doubt, I would be very polite, pay this in full, on agreement that the entire situation is resolved, completed and no further action will be taken from his part to recover any further costs.
It just simply isn't worth your time and costs to continue this further.
