Builder's cleans
« on: July 25, 2023, 04:23:39 pm »
24 years and 5 months I've been doing this job.

How have I not learned?

Supposed to start a massive job this morning (large block of flats + 50ish houses). Got an email at 4:58 last night - apparently they're not ready for us. We've been emailing back and forth for weeks.

Email them back with bye bye.

We've all been there and done builders cleans. Would I do another one? Nope!
We look at them, they look through them.

On one now - 10 days late starting - it was a game of chicken as I wouldn’t start until they paid 50% upfront - their counter was we never pay a deposit to subbies..

Guess who won 😆

It's a big job and the first with this company, there is (was?) more in the pipeline. They've offered to pay for the missed day but I'd rather they just kept to their word to be honest.

Not sure how it's going to pan out now. Not heard anything from them since 4:58 on Monday night.

Let’s hope it’s just a kink that can be worked out

Darran I hope you get the other 50% when the job is finished.  👍

My next neighbour runs his own service business part of which is to get a window cleaner to do a first clean (after a mastic and label clean by his own lads when removing scaffolding).

He asked me if I would work a Saturday or Sunday for £300 just before COVID.

I said no but knew a man who would. (Dan the Man borrowing my extreme 47  ;D)

Dan has done about ten days for my neighbour over several jobs since then. They entail driving fifty to a hundred miles from home to the site, doing the job and getting paid as soon as the invoice goes in.

Last summer Dan was booked in for two days in Cirencester for a little over £350 each.

He turned up to find they weren't ready for him. He didn't want to queer the pitch and asked me how I would handle it as it hadn't happened before.

Anyway he spoke to my neighbour and it was amicably resolved. My neighbor paid him a fair amount for the two non worked days, DtM also got the two days work about a fortnight later AND he did some of his own work on one of the first two days he didn't work.

It's a game of three halves!
