Reasonable wage for an employee in 2023
« on: June 12, 2023, 11:53:19 am »
Hey guys,
I’m thinking of employing my first guy soon , iv actually worked with this guy back in the days of working for Royal Mail . He is a grafter and iv known him for about 15 years so I know what he’s like.
Now then , looking at the Royal Mail website, their wage is currently £11.59 an hour on a 30 hour contract in the north and £13.59 down south.  Is this similar to what others pay their staff? I want to pay him a decent wage because I know he’ll stick at it but not sure how much . I’m not sure  he’d jump ship for the same wage but he did say he’d definitely consider it - any help is most appreciated.
I’m at the stage we’re it’s difficult to take days off so this would help loads without actually stop taking on new work.
Cheers

I mean minimum wage is £10.40 an hour I think so 20-21k a year on a 30 hour a week flexible contract maybe I’m thinking . My work is all in a 3 mile radius and I’m pretty much working 6 days a week now, so would prefer to cut down a little

Cheers Darren & Simon , I’m not interested in paying minimum wage - I want to pay someone as decent wage so they’ll do a good job and stick at it - your wages are very respectable

Pay peanuts get monkeys, our guys are on £120-150 per day plus monthly bonuses for no complaints and hitting targets , paying less than this I found they lacked motivation now they work hard knowing they will be rewarded for there hard work the more  they do the more they earn but not at the expense of quality.

Yes it keeps them motivated and they can earn a considerable  bonus come the end of the  month with extra work completed, this benefit s them and me .

this works very well and as you say keeps the quality up there

better than the alternative getting cr@p pay and working for a complete t!t

I don’t think they’ll earn that kinda money at many jobs , sounds awesome- is that a 40hr 5 days a week job?

Yes 40 hours a week they can do more and earn more if they want by starting early and finishing late it’s there choice  they don’t have to but the  option is there if they want it . We are that busy at the moment we are booked up until September on addons so plenty of opportunities for them 😂😂😂

I only take on people I know  now , had ones in the past  that I didn’t know and they turned out to be wasters on their phones drinking tea all the time , they think I don’t know what they are up to but I know what’s achievable as ime still on the tools myself so no what they should be doing per day , I have an excellent team but it’s taken a lot of time and hard work to achieve it , but now it benefits all of us and they all pull their weight as they know what they can earn in extras each month it they work hard .

Still a very good deal for them on a basic salary though some people you would keep for life.

Just to follow on from this , I know it’s faster from what iv heard to have one guy in each van (depending on your work) but what percentage of extra work can be done with 2 guys one can? If I could did £100 of work on my own in a day (for example not real figures) , how much extra would another guy add in a day to that £100?
Probably not twice the amount but is it another 30/40% maybe?
