Cracked windscreen
« on: April 27, 2023, 09:54:44 pm »
Today I was driving into a residential estate, at the side of the pavement there were two council employees using petrol strimmers  to cut back the grass near shrubs. One of the strimmers  hit a stone which then came into contact with my windscreen and cracked it. I stopped and showed the operatives the damage and they have admitted causing the damage. I then drove to their depot to speak with a manager who gave me a third party claim form to fill in, I was advised that the process in deciding the claim can take up to 8 weeks!. Obviously I can’t wait that long so I’ve had to claim on my insurance in the meantime.
Windscreen replacement doesn’t affect your NCB does it?
Unfortunately because it’s a heated screen and the rain sensors have to be re calibrated I need to take the van to an Autoglass fitting centre which is 25 miles away which is a bit of an inconvenience 😩….I’ve had better days!

Don't forget to claim loss of earnings!
Normally windscreens don't effect NCD but check your policy!
Might be worth passing on the form to your insurance company.

You'll be lucky to get loss of earnings - costs yes

Your insurance co. should now chase this up as they will want to claim off the council

It never used to affect your NCB but some companies now have a get out clause.

Read your terms & conditions.

I will have to phone my insurance co again tomorrow. I’m with AXA and when you phone the claim line you get put through directly to Autoglass without even speaking to an advisor from AXA.

Just checked my t&c’s and my NCB will not be affected, phew! I was a bit worried there would be a get out clause due to the price of the heated windscreen……..it’s £992 from Ford just for the windscreen😲

Allow yourself a good 45 mins of being put on hold if your ringing AXA  :(, had to ring them about 5 times recently because someone hit my car, it's been hard work. They tell you their preferred means of contact is email, but don't respond to emails so you end up having to ring, not impressed with them.

I doubt the insurance company will use a ford screen , most use national windscreen s or a similar firm I know yours is heated but  seam to remember talking to a guy from national windscreens a few years ago and he said that they get them direct from the manufacturer that supplies ford

Ford don’t make windscreens, the difference between the one you get fitted and a ford screen will be the ford badge because they don’t own the copyright on logo.

*used to work for autoglass.

That’s correct, the guy at the Autoglass call centre told me the only difference in the windscreen would be the Ford logo. I’m still waiting on them getting back to me with a fitting day, they offered me 17th May but told them I need it done quicker than that.

It will be a laminated screen so will only crack not shatter driving round with it the worst that will happen is the crack will get bigger.

I know that, I only went into the Ford garage on the passing to get an idea of the price of a windscreen before I visited the council grounds maintenance depot, just in case they tried to fob me off.

He shared that hed tried it on a porsche once but found out they have a plastic film on the inside !

Yes

Just make sure that both sides of the screen are working after its fitted. When the screen is on the lines are a bit more visible.

That’s good advice, I will check once it’s fitted👍🏻
