Going back to working on my own
« on: April 14, 2023, 06:10:12 pm »
As per my previous threads on here I have been sick of window cleaning but after quite a bit of thought I think the positives far outweigh the negatives.

This week my lad has been on holiday and I was dreading working on my own but its gone really well. My memories of setting up and packing away being a nightmare have been proved wrong.

Also hit decent revenue numbers.

What's really telling is that I realise that my lad is way too slow. I knew he was slow but I've been finishing houses on my own in only 5-10 minutes more than when there is two of us.

So been thinking about going solo again. Would mean a considerable amount of money to me.

Anyone gone back to working on there own and can share their thoughts?

Thanks

You have to make the decision that is best for you - some here will give true accurate advice - others, well... I don't think I really need to explain, other than an important decision like this wouldn't be made by strangers on a forum..

Depends how old you are and general health....
For what it’s worth,my lad has been helping me part time along with his studying at college...worked
Really well for last year,as I have Crohn’s disease and even part time I find I have  some more downtime
With the condition.
Now I’m thinking when he goes on and gets a career..I will have to make another decision..
Whatever you choose 😉

Yes about 6 times haha

Just going back on my own again right now.

Lad who works with me last week next week.

The only way to make employing work is have them out in a separate van.

Working together you only really cover their wages and  a bit more but it ain't worth it. My lad isn't slow, he's faster than me but it's the drive between houses and the un reeling and packing away that's slower. You are only actually twice as fast when brushes hit the glass, everything else is the same speed as solo working.

It will be nice not to have the responsibility and to be able to finish early rather than having to stay out till 4pm because we got rained off the day before.

In my case he had a weeks holiday booked in May plus 3 Bank Holidays thank god I don't have to pay him for that  :D

If you are anything like me you get bored, or perhaps depressed working alone and employ simply to occupy the brain fir a while. Then you realise what a ball ache it is and enjoy the relief of going back solo. Till next time you get fed up that it.....its a never ending cycle for me.

The above comment I don’t agree with and that’s from experience as to say you’ll only cover their wages is rubbish m8,yeah ok out on their own they’ll do well but I can hit great numbers with 2 of us in 1 van.
Like everything in window cleaning it’s all about what work you have, you might clean 6-8 jobs and earn 100-120 notes some others may clean the same amount and get  6-7 times that, over a full day 2 of you can erase a huge amount of work if you have a good routine.

I agree it's about what work you have and in my work it isn't really worth it.

Too much driving and not enough time actually on the glass.

The more small jobs you have the more time is taken by driving. So on my round we might do 35 to 40  Jobs between two of us. On my own I could do 25 in the same time.

That's 35 to 40 lots of getting the gear out and back in and driving. Pretty much all of my round is 1 job then drive, it suits seperate vans much better. There's lots of things that can slow a 2 man team down, for example front only jobs where 1 man is standing around watching or where you pull up and the back gate isn't open again reducing 1 man to being stood about.

If you only did 10 large properties between you or all day on a commercial you are going to be a lot better off with 2.

I think when the days of trad cleaning was the norm, having a lad with you was massively beneficial, but not so much with WFP.

Better to have them in their own van doing a separate days work to you.

My plan is still to have someone doing all the window cleaning whilst I do all the softwashing jobs etc etc.

It's only been a week though.
You could have a word with him about his speed, if that's the problem.
How does working with him affect your mental health?

1 Man 1 Van is nearly always going to to be the best money you can bring in for domestic work.

We used to have 2 men in 1 van, and when we switched the difference it made was night and day.

Like i'd never ever go back to 2 man 1 van for domestics, not worth it at all.

I have been working on my own since mid Dec and obviously struggling and failing to keep the work up to date. What with being ill for 3 weeks and the cold soap we had it compounded and I am approx 1 month behind. (My round is a full 2 man round)
I actually prefer to work on my own as it is so hard to find a normal person to work with you. Podcast, radio and music fill the day and I can finish late without the worker complaining. Im not sure how sustainable it will be as I am now in a dilemma of getting rid of work.

I think a lot of employers who are still on the glass make the mistake of thinking their employees should and will do the same work as they do, they don't get that an employee wont have the same financial  incentive to work as hard as they do and even if that employee is still making them a decent amount of extra profit still get angry about it.

Still get angry I like it and know what you mean lol I’ve had problems with work standards more than anything, reliability has been 100% but sloppy work I can’t handle as my prices aren’t cheap and it’s very hard when you’ve never had quality issues before.

I agree to some extent - ive had some great employees - defo faster than me and get no snags - I concentrate on the quality issues first then build up the speed which comes naturally as they do more windows and rounds,
from some replies some just don't get it - employing I mean
