From the look of a photo of where the van the windie was driving ended up, it would appear to me that the driver of the Citroen pulled out of a side road into the path of his van. It was in the 60mph speed zone, although the windie should only have been travelling at 50mph. His van veered off the road to his left, which indicates to me that he got hit on the right side of his van.

Again, this is very sad, but I hope they release a few more details of the accident, so we can learn from what happened.

oh, how very defensive of you! - but ive seen a few vans after crashes of various types - Securior parcels used to send out a booklet every six months with dozens of the worst accidents the drivers had from "pony express" escort vans right uptown the 18 wheelers - some of those were only at 45 to 55 MPH and there was no cab left - what I said was an observation

Wynyard Road leads into Sandy Lane at a sharp bend. This is at most a 40mph bend in my van. After the bend is a short straight of road (around a quarter of a mile) and then the road bends toward the left before it crosses the A19. There is no way that van could reach 80mph in that short straight of road IMHO.

I suspect that Citroen pulled out from that side road.

You are right, zesty. Nobody has suggested in any subsequent posts that the reason for the accident was because he was travelling at 80mph.   Maybe speed could have been a factor, maybe not. Thankfully, Susan and her husband survived their accident. Andrew didn't.

I was just using Susan's 80mph accident speed as a baseline for thought, as I doubt that a Transit could reach that speed on that length of road, if at all. And of course, the speed limit for our vans would be 50mph on that stretch of road.

The other comment Susan made regarding the tank moving could well be a more likely cause of death rather than high speed. Unfortunately, no details have been released, so it's all conjecture atm.

A lot of incidents are filmed now with body worn cameras and vehicle cameras and are sometimes used for learning points and sometimes just to confirm you did everything you could .  I was recently at a double fatal head on crash caused by a medical episode , two adults dead ( bot deaths were after us doing 45-50 mins of cpr on both casualties with several shocks ) and a 14 year old child critical.  One of the cars was upside down and on fire with the occupant still inside. Watching the video back afterwards was very helpful to me , because it set my mind at rest that we did everything we possibly could , its very easy for self doubt to creep in and destroy you mentally.   People(especially firefighter) should not be sharing images with anybody except under very specific circumstances and with the families permission , anything else is abhorrent and a sackable offence.

I have stopped off duty i think maybe 5 times in 15 years...........so maybe your mate is dodgy or very unlucky!
