Interesting to read the different replies the way you all handle the situation.

The other 3 in the road I have had for 3 to 4 years, they all gave a generous Christmas tip, the one that turned me away yesterday I have been doing for 10 months, not even a "have a good Christmas".
The neighbour (whose drive I park in while I do them all) asked why I did not clean them and I explained he did not want me to because it rained after I came last time, they said "that is not your fault".

I would like to stop cleaning there, they pay by bank transfer (sometimes need reminding). If he wanted to take revenge could he do anything with my details, name, bank details etc?

I would dump him because quite frankly it's a ridiculous excuse.....I have done in the past and will again.you can't run a business with flaky customers like him... :)

The thing is though you might end up dumping a lot of customers over the next year then,
Well you have been harping on about this for ages now and none of us have seen a dramatic loss of customers..

You worry about it cause im not.
We have just paid out January combined Gas and Electric for the last 3 months,it was 1200 used to be 400.
April sees another rise in the cost of living anyone that can’t see a downturn has  their head in the sand I’m afraid, bit like seeing you’re Mrs with another bloke on the face of it she’s with you she hasn’t left but it’s happening 🤣.
You have no control over other people’s finances even the Mafia smiled at you before they wacked you lol.

Im well aware of the cost of living....i have not had any cancellations for window cleaning and i have had customers booking in extra jobs for the spring since November....i may lose a few but no doubt i will gain a few too...
I think you've had a few cancellations and that's why your all doom and gloom.

I’ve not had any cancel thanks I have had a few push backs on domestics that are 3-400 + though, tell a porky 🐷 I’ve had 1 cancel 2 months ago but only a £30 domestic.
I gained a 60 last week and have a couple to look at next week also so no not doom and gloom,I just don’t want people to get like they  are approaching vinegar strokes and get disappointed when the light comes on so to speak.

That very much depends on where they're situated Vin, if it's in the middle of an estate surrounded by other cleans you could be making a rod for your own back, these neighbours will no doubt talk, quite possibly have a neighbourhood WhatsApp group, and if you let one dictate when you should clean, others may feel they can do the same. I would have a conversation with them, explain you can miss it this time but in future if your to keep them on the books it has to be every time,, "I never start a job in the rain but can't be accountable for what happens afterwards, weather forecasts unreliable etc etc. I remember making a similar mistake in my early days, there was a huddle of people talking and one came over and said can you do mine every other time, to which I reluctantly said yes, she went back to the huddle and with that 3 others neighbours requested the same, it  wiped off £500 from my turnover because I was growing the round and eager to please. Its not easy when your growing your business but you'll see the benefit in the long run, your way or no way.

Edit.. I've  had a few not today's and I've let it ride because of the present climate but if someone where to use the weather as an excuse, particularly the weather after I've been then they're definitely not the sort of customer I want. It's a ridiculous excuse, if it rained whilst you were doing it then  you can see where they're coming from but we're in the UK, it WILL rain on their windows after you've been sometime, guartenteed.

I see this regularly on here about customers having chats about their window cleaner and ganging up on them. I can say with 100% honesty that the subject of window cleaners never, not once, came up in any of the thousands of conversations I had before starting out in the business. Not once*.

Maybe everyone else's customers have nothing else to talk about but it does seem odd.

Vin

* [edit] I think I may have asked a neighbour once after we'd moved who they used.

Whilst i agree that we as window cleaners are by and large quite an insignificant part of peoples lives, i am conscious that like a lot on here , i don't advertise anywhere, not even on my van, all my new work for donkeys years has come from recommendations which means there is a network of sorts, this person knows that one etc which is an obvious by product of recommendations, so if you have exceptions to rules, you really have to be prepared to offer that to everyone if asked, and i really don't want to. Iv'e got a formula that works for me and its much easier if i stick to it. Then again i'm a sole trader and intend to stay that way, i imagine if you employ, then there's a a different  mindset, and you have to be more active in  looking for more work with more overheads.

He's skint mate, plain and obvious, he a bonus job when he has them done from now on, If you need the work next time your round do him,if you don't drop him, he's more likely to knock you for a clean than get a big pay rise and want you regually
Very unlikely he has a long time future on your books.

I’m not going to say to someone on you’re bike when they say can we push back a month or so if it’s 70-80 notes every 6-8 weeks normally, what’s that gonna do make you feel good and puff you’re chest out for 5 minutes and then think S***t why did I do that I know how that feels coz I’ve done it.

You are completely missing the point. It wasn't building work. It wasn't a funeral. It wasn't even raining stair rods. The stated reason was "Because it rained the day after, last time."

Anyone who keeps that kind of customer needs to give their head a wobble.

Regardless I wouldn’t be sacking off decent jobs because of ego etc whether they moaned about it raining the next day etc either, these things can be overcome with good customer service they are all important therefore I don’t have any cheap jobs so they are worth the time at least talking to.

I don’t think it was  a £60 job  but Evan if it was his reason to cancel was it rained after the last clean we have no control over that what will be his excuse next time , best to dump and move on especially if you get a bad vibe from them

the comment like that would put me in the OK - FU - mode - I may not dump but wouldn't clean until asked and then a new price issued.

I have no issues with a not this time for valid (what I perceive as such) reasons - building - repairs - painting - landscaping - funerals
and wouldn't worry.

those that do it regular do get dumped

Darran

Exactly the same as you.

Started one new area with 15 new customers and within a year every single one  took the mickey with excuses so I called it a day in that area, They asked me to come back and told them not in a million years, only work for regular customers. Three strikes for timewasting automatic dump!

Was it a new build area by any chance?

It was a mixture of bungalows and really old houses (kermit style) with customers between 40-70. I only took it on because their previous window cleaner stopped calling, (I'm not surprised) with can you leave it this time with poor excuses. Genuine excuses like painting, builders, etc I will excuse but irregular customers are more hassle than they are worth.
I book all my work in the evening before, so all my time is accounted for each day,  so to be messed around with poor excuses the following day at work is not acceptable in my opinion. Can't run a business with a slack tolerance of attitude.

Dump

There is no shortage of good, reliable customers. Don’t waste your time and effort on a messer, they cannot be rehabilitated.

If you’re short of work. In my experience it’s better to use your non working time to get more customers rather than spend it doing annoying unreliable jobs.

He’s probably skint and hasn’t had his monthly pay cheque. It would pee me off. I’d probably ‘forget’ to do them next time around.

If someone told me not to clean their windows because it will rain in a couple days time I would politely thank them for their custom and inform them to look for another mug (window cleaner) as I only clean windows on a regular basis for regular customers who value my service and walk away, strike them off the round, filed under muppets.

Had one muppet ask me twelve years later if I wouldn't mind cleaning their windows and I politely informed her I wouldn't because she had previously been a PITA customer. I maybe terrible remembering names but I never forget a face, ever  :)

totally confused Nigel - your always banging on about how your work is all upper end 100+ - fancy lawyers - captains of industry - celebs - all fighting for you to clean their glass - now it appears your doing £30 bulk standard stuff like us mere mortals

what's going on ???
