Prices do tend to vary if you know the owner then quite often they will do you a discount ,

The maximum fee for a car upto 8 seats or goods vehicle under 3000kg is £54.85 but the garage can charge less if they want.

They can charge what they want but they have to pay the ministry a fee of x amount. That’s always been my understanding.

It doesn't matter if they do have a 3 year warranty. The van can be 2 years old and fail on brake pads or a bulb that's blown. Fair wear and tear items aren't included in the warranty.

A two year old van doesn't require an annual MOT

Class 4 MOT's are usually cheaper than class 7 MOT's. There are many more garages doing class 4 MOT's as these include private cars and used to create easy business opportunities. Yours is class 4. There is a local garage advertising MOTs for £29.95, but they will make that up on repairs they deem necessary to get the car passed.

A lot of these class 4 MOT garages are exhaust, tyres and brake focused. So guess what they will mainly find needing repair.
And they have the power to not allow a car that's failed its MOT out of their property until that car is repaired and roadworthy. 

My Citroen Relay 1100 was class 4 at the GVW was under 3000 kgs. My Peugeot Boxer is a 3300kg van so needs a class 7 MOT. It is more expensive as the lift required to accommodate the heavier van costs a lot more. There are only 2 garages in a 10 mile radius of us that do Class 7 MOT's, and one of them is a rip off.

For me, the garage I take my van to charged me £55. According to the DVLA they log into for each MOT, each test must take an hour to be done properly. My MOT inspector uses another mechanic to help him with the MOT, so each MOT costs him 2 men's wages.

You are right Simon. I was making a point that warranty doesn't cover every thing for 3 years. Looking at your reply, I understand why you made the response you did.
Let me rephrase it. A dealership doing a 2 year service could refuse to let the vehicle off their premises if they deemed the brakes were unsafe. The van could well be under warranty, but the owner will be responsible for the bill to replace those parts.

But also remember that a vehicle registered as a taxi needs to be MOTed and then tested every 6 months and a renewal test every 12 months at a council testing station. Many local authorities have authorisation from VOSA to complete their own annual safety inspections of PHVs that replace the standard MOT. When a vehicle is registered as a PHV with a VOSA-approved local authority it becomes MOT exempt.

Local authorities without this approval from VOSA use the standard MOT accompanied by an additional safety inspection to cover the extra requirements.  And in our area I believe those tests are every 6 months. Every 12 months they have to apply for a renewal licence which also must include a safety certificate.

Your garage probably uses MOT’s as a loss leader, much like Tesco do with milk. They’ll make the real money when your van fails on brake pads or tyres.

No garage is making decent money bashing out MOT’s at £40 a time.
