With the best will in the world, only a very small percentage of people are going to be physically able to do this job into their 70’s. Having that as your only plan for your later years is just crazy imo. Then there’s the squatting in your Mrs house thing aswell. Not great planning Daz but aslong as you’re happy.   

Really?do you think you'll be knackered when your 70?I know loads of older folk who work and are perfectly fit and healthy...as for moving in with the missus,of course everything will be fine.ive been with her over 10 years and we are very happy.😄

I hope I won’t be knackered by 70, keep myself fit, run marathons etc, however, banking on being able to bring an income in by doing a physical job at that age, with no backup plan, is madness imo.

I don't need a back up plan Danny.why would I?I'll have my state pension,a large nest egg and no mortgage if I can't work for whatever reason...

Be warned Daz - at 51 I was fit worked hard etc…. 52 - bang - suddenly could t do anything - became ill ended up in a&e several times - 3 operations led to kidney failure - can’t even boil a kettle now without being exhausted

The guitarist out of my former band has suffered with kidney problems most of his adult life.hes now stopped gigging as he s just not well enough most days.he s 45.one of his brothers is hoping to give one if compatible.hes had 2 kidney transplants already.his left arm is swollen to almost twice the size of his left arm and he s on home dialysis....

A mixture of things Daz. Not a pension as such  but a stocks and shares ISA which I have full control of the investments in, property, being mortgage free before I’m 50 etc.

I’m undecided on the work thing yet, I’m happy being a sole trader at the moment whilst my kids are young but I may in the future decide to grow to have staff, more vans and a business that can be managed from off the tools and could be sold if I wanted.

Mrs will also have a good teachers pension but that’s hers so I wouldn’t include that in any planning

I'm  64 still work two days a week but a couple of years ago I asked myself if I still wanted to be working at 70. The short answer was no so now I have a full time and part time worker that's helping me move into full time retirement hopefully this year. Last year I was able take 9 weeks holidays abroad which included two weeks in Spain this Xmas and New Year got home yesterday.
They both earn decent money with flexible hours to suit both parties it also gives me a good income without actually working.
As Daz explained you never know what's round the corner more so at our age. My doctor once said that if your lucky to get though your fifties then there's a good chance you'll sail through your sixties and beyond.

I rented a unit and the guy next door (his unit was much bigger) came over to suss me out, see who I was etc, we got talking.
He fixed gearboxes (that's all he did); all the local garages, large and small, would send him the car, he would take out the gearbox, strip it, fix it and put it back in. He said he charges around £2k per gearbox.
He told me that he retired early, a while back, sold his business, and moved to Spain, he bought a large plot of land as his wife kept horses. One day he was mowing his huge lawn on his ride-on mower and 'had a moment' where he wondered what the hell he was doing with his life! A guy in the local village had a problem with his gearbox so the guy fixed it.
He has now moved back to the UK, started up a new business and fixes gearboxes again, his daughter works with him too.
I guess retirement is different things to different people!

I think this is quite an interesting point.

Who knows where they will want to be or what they will want or be able to do when they are 60 plus and approaching retirement.

If you haven't invested, saved, got a pension  or built a business to support you then chances are you get to that age and your only option is to keep working...

Maybe it's better to put yourself in a position that when you get to 60 you have options. Retire, keep working, emigrate or whatever else.

Food for thought, time moves fast and we can get caught up in life and not plan properly. I know I don't have any clear plan and I'm 41 doesn't seem 2 minutes since I started window cleaning but it's been over 8 years I've just been drifting along.

Your story is exactly why i just couldn't relax going part time like Daz when i know i could be earning more doing more hours because we just don't know what tomorrow will bring  and i simply don't have enough behind me to cope if the worse happens and truth be told, i don't think Daz does, £40k tucked away wont last long. I'm very much in the "make hay whilst you can " camp. Id be lying if i didn't say i was a little bit envious of his lifestyle, i guess there's a compromise in there somewhere, probably along the lines of full time but with more annual leave.

The problem with your way of thinking is you ll probably die in another 15 years working full time now to enjoy taking it a bit easier later in life....these things tend to happen to some people who think there doing everything right and working hard now....they drop dead when they get to 65....

I prefer to enjoy my life NOW....take it a bit easier NOW.....I'm still saving money and enjoying myself!

Obviously there's no guarantees but slowing up now at 51 will probably mean I've got a longer part time working life left in me without burning myself out which ironically is just how I like to live my life.

Be "part time" as daz calls it. Maybe working 8 til 2ish  4 days a week

Employ and grow

working 5/6 day weeks full time is not an option i would consider, theres really no need if you dont want to employ then put prices up. I would say if anyone needs to bust a gut like that they are living well beyond their means. 50k a year "part time" should be enough for anyone.
