Up until last month I would always change my brush angle for roof lights to about 90 degrees to the glass and often still do to get height over the roof edge.

However I have now been trying a different approach when there are roof lights on a single storey extension and typically bedroom windows above.

Instead of doing the bedroom windows, collapsing the pole and adjusting the brush head to 90 degrees and re extending, I set the brush for the bedroom windows, maybe slightly more angled than normal and then if the roof edge allows, use it for the roof lights.

I was concerned that the jets might bring grit or muck down from the top edge but generally it seems ok and saves me a pole collapse and brush adjustment. Probably saving about 30 seconds and some pole wear.

Have I got to the point of diminishing returns? 

How do you do roof lights on regular work?

I never adjust the angle as I mainly use a 55 degree carbon gooseneck for most of my work.my brush is not totally  flat on the glass on  some skylights but I can still clean them effectively

I'm constantly adjusting  the angle of my brush throughout the day to get the brush nice and flat out the glass.

its a waste of time messing about changing the angle of your brush all the time...i adjust the angle of the  pole instead

Each to their own but i couldnt work like that, and it's hardly messing about wasting  time adjusting the angle it literally takes 2 secs.

I just turn the brush vertical and clean the velux side to side, perfect brush to glass angle on both window and velux just by a twist of the pole.👍

Once you’ve mastered the swivel there’s no looking back (as opposed to the flounce or the mince).

I have a carbon gooseneck that gets used on  one job only on my whole round. A swivel is so much more versatile, wouldn’t be without it.

in 12 years THAT is the first time someone has pointed out an actual good use for a swivel.

unfortunately I don't like them - never really been a problem either standing in a different place - angling the pole to do any window
but I see the advantage on a skylight

I also like to use the swivel Gardiner adapter.
As said it takes time to get used to it but personally think it’s worth pushing through and getting used to it. The brush will will have full face contact with the glass and get in the corners less strain from funny positioning.

They work far better with a 45 degree brush connection rather than 90 degree. In the video above, it looks like he's using 90 degree as his angles are more limited and look awkward. Gardiners sell a 45 degree swivel quick loq adaptor- it makes all the difference! The original 'Gaz' swivel was also angled, this is why it was so good.👍

You’re all over thinking it. Window cleaning does that to you because it’s so profoundly boring and the mind starts to wander.

Just put any brush on it, at any angle, scrub a bit and pull all the loose bits down to the bottom of the velux.

You can adjust the tension of the swivel to suit your preference, from completely loose and floppy to rigid. I recommend just enough to stop the brush flopping when off the glass.  You must allow a little time and practice to get used to how it feels and works, it will feel very different to begin with but I can almost guarantee you'll never look back if you master it. It's all in the wrist/twist of the pole to manipulate the brush angle. You'll require much less body movement and effort throughout the day by utilising the swivel to your advantage.😎👌

I'll just add, that all of the above will just become natural in a short time and you'll be applying it without even thinking about it. The benefits of the swivel are many, way too much to be writing about on xmas eve!👍
