It was -8 today at 8:40 when I set off. It rose to a positively tropical -4 briefly at around midday when the sun came out.
Yesterday it was -7 and -6 all day. I still worked.
The major difference is that there has not been any snow, so the roads are mostly ok. (I have declared off-days in warmer weather where snowy roads make driving dangerous)
I do carry a tub of rock salt and will use it on paths. Today, for example, the water froze on the ground before I’d even finished each window.
For employing, my policy is this: we will aim to make up the hours lost due to weather, but if that hasn’t been possible by the time the end of the month comes, we just pay those days at a full rate, and start afresh for the next month.
It isn’t the employees fault that the weather is bad, so it’s not really fair to not pay. You just have to budget for this cost when you decide to employ.
I am finding that if you treat people fairly, they are willing to go the extra mile when you need them to.
