I can’t believe you’d sack the day off when the air temps are above freezing. Must be bloody soft down your way!

just an update for you Daz - today we had our hotbox serviced - it was tested outside producing 150 degrees heated water - we immediately swept the excess water away - within 10 minutes the wet concrete was an ice rink.

you take your chance - but I would say if your customer slips on ice created by you then you will be liable

Darran

Yawn    ::)roll.....Same argument every time we get a bit of cold weather...no water froze that I swept away today....that's all that matters

I've never had a single issue in 13 years of wfp....so I'll carry on not worrying about potential liability. ;D

How do you know what the ground is like hours after you have left water on it , if what you are saying is true then you haven’t had very cold nights , ware we are is one of the mildest places in the country most of the time but Monday the muinit water hit the floor it turned to ice and we had a + 2-3 air temperature. It’s the ground temperature that will affect what happens to the water in the floor more than air temperature.

It’s a good job you live in one of the mildest parts of the country with that attitude…..if you were in Scotland you’d never get any work done.

Genuine question for those that employ and are currently saying it’s too cold to work, (Smudger/Splash+dash/NWH). Are you paying your lads to be sat at home now?

Still waiting for an answer Nigel, my finger is hovering over the 🐂💩 button.

It'll be peeing down all of next week and we'll have the "can't work in the rain" brigade sat at home  ;D then come July we'll have a week of 30 degree's and well have the same mob only able to work for three hours because the heat is so draining  ;D

I think some people start going stir crazy when the weather ‘forces’ them to have a few days off.

Remember the winter of 2010 on here? It snowed before Xmas and temps were down below -10° for a couple of weeks solid. This place went into meltdown, it was great fun  ;D

I remember it well. The difference then was that there was heavy snowfall before the temperatures plummeted and there was no thaw for about two weeks. The snow was banked up on the roads/pavements meaning most residential streets were single line traffic. At least this time there has only been a sprinkling of snow where I am….not enough to stop play!

You should go and do your scheduled work and have a right to expect those tips but don't be giving elf & safety tips, Daz.

I do. It was great. I remember going to bed, looking out at the snow and looking forward to another lie in.

It was -8 today at 8:40 when I set off.  It rose to a positively tropical -4 briefly at around midday when the sun came out.

Yesterday it was -7 and -6 all day. I still worked.

The major difference is that there has not been any snow, so the roads are mostly ok. (I have declared off-days in warmer weather where snowy roads make driving dangerous)

I do carry a tub of rock salt and will use it on paths. Today, for example, the water froze on the ground before I’d even finished each window.

For employing, my policy is this: we will aim to make up the hours lost due to weather, but if that hasn’t been possible by the time the end of the month comes, we just pay those days at a full rate, and start afresh for the next month.

It isn’t the employees fault that the weather is bad, so it’s not really fair to not pay. You just have to budget for this cost when you decide to employ.

I am finding that if you treat people fairly, they are willing to go the extra mile when you need them to.

Yeah but stopping everything freezing is just 1 advantage of a Hot Water system that you see this time of the year, same old argument at Christmas 🎄.

Apart from the heater itself and possibly your hose reels the frost stat on a diesel heater doesn't stop anything else in the back of the van from freezing, poles etc.
my system is plumb in so it runs though the hose reels and back in to the tank, so hoses reels dont freeze up,
has for pole hose the only other thing that could freeze, their so little water left in them at the emd of the day, once you connect to hose reel on first job the heat melted the ice, never had a issue in four years with the system and always worked, come and take a look si if it helps

MWH what a complete tool you are.you havent answered about paying your worker and once again side stepped the queation

you are full of GOLDS siht

sorry marc

We pay annualised hours - so although they don't get paid for not working they will get paid and those hours are booked against their name - when the summer comes round when they do extra hours (which in fairness is 10 months of the year) we take 2 or 3 hours back each month until the balance is zero.

so its not as brutal or unfair as you may think

Brutal?
I think a lot of employees would appreciate not having the responsibilities that go with working with water and driving in freezing conditions.
I would.

I pay a full month regardless of weather time off due to sickness etc he’s been off for over 2 weeks he will get paid,I haven’t bothered this week due to bad weather and probably will only work Thursday and Friday.
What you need to really think about Cranky Frank is getting a well heeled Mrs because at the end of the day bills need to be paid,I’ve told her don’t get ugly or I’ll be off.
If you haven’t got capital and you employ and you do it correctly it’s going to cost you it has and it is us,van insurance and employer’s liability is an extra 1000 notes on top of what I was paying and that’s just 1 little bill Franky Panky.
Like I said get a rich Mrs but make sure she looks good or it’s pointless some things I won’t do for money 🤣🤣.
