Van leasing - won't be doing that again.
« on: November 28, 2022, 12:56:55 pm »
Bunch of charlatans.

On returning a van I got a bill in for £1200 for "damage" and late fees.

The van was mint and they turned up 2 weeks late to collect, then tried to charge me for it!

Absolute con artists.

Just buy your vans lads.

I've asked them for evidence of the damage and pointed them in the direction of the BVRLA fair wear and tear guidelines.

I have a storage business, so I have invoiced them for safe storage of their vehicle for 14 days. Guess how much that came to  ;D

Was it mannahein that did the inspection and collection?

Other than having to pay I think £180 for a missed service, they’ve always been reasonable with collecting my leased vans.

I suppose that’s why you’re driving a 14+ year old van?

Leasing doesn’t work for everyone but while the cost of brand new vans were reasonable it’s always worked for me.

Leasing vans in my book is a mugs game unless you are a huge firm and have money to burn , also I agree with NHW I wouldn’t want to be taking kit out of a van and into another every 3 years right pita our oldest van is 2018 and will be keeping it obviously cannot claim much as capital allowance is all used up but it’s reliable looks good so no point in changing it , my van is 18 months old now and I will be keeping it until I retire , kitting a van out and getting it right takes a while if it was a parcel delivery van then yes I fully understand why ones would change it high mileage , and nothing to put in it .

Yeah sod leasing...

I bought my 65plate vivaro 5 years ago with 32k it's now done 78k and apart from a bit of wear and tear it's been brilliant and I will be keeping it another 5 years at least ...Paid 12k including the vat when i bought it so its not lost a great deal of money either.

I bought two vans a few years back, just recently sold one and will be keeping this one until I retire. Leasing is a mugs game.

Bought my house, renting is dead money.

Don't  pay using credit, save first for anything including my last vehicle.

Latest thing I've bought is a serious off grid/tied in grid solar home system to run all my appliances using solar and 48volt battery packs. Energy prices are forever going up so it makes sense to reduce costs long term.  Insulated my house to the maximum to also aid energy savings.

Plan on retiring early so it's been a long term approach to making life easier and cheaper moving forward.

I doubt I'll be leasing again either. I took mine over 5 years rather than the usual 3 for lower monthly outgoings. Unfortunately, covid came up when the 5 years was coming up and I needed to use covid money for the balloon payment. I had no legal way to return it either at the time because of covid restrictions. Due to being very ill for quite a while, I lost a wedge of work. The covid wasn't too terrible, but the after effects stuck around for ages. It's taken a couple of years to feel anything like normal and this will probably be as good as it gets - I can live with this. Anyway, back to the lease. I kept that van afterwards and still have it. I don't own it but only pay a "peppercorn" rent of about £1k once a year. When I sell, I have to pay them a tiny fraction of the sale price. As I took so long off work, the mileage isn't excessive even after 7+ years.  I prefer to own outright though as there can be additional complexities with leasing, especially if you don't have the choice of retaining the vehicle under a cheap rental deal.

If you dont mind saying. how much has that cost you and what sort of size house is it for please? As for leasing, never have seen the sense in it.

I would not call that a "peppercorn rent"

What you could have done(I guess yours is a business finance lease)is sell the van at the end of the contract to someone you know, pay off the balloon payment, buy it back off them then the van is yours.... ;)...loads of people do this!🙂
price higher/work harder!

I had off grid up to 2kwh since 2015 but recently bought more kit to take it up to 8kwh, cost me roughly £8k for tied in with mains unit for the recent stuff. Won't be selling it back to the grid as the excess will be used for heating water and the likes.

Whether you buy new or lease it's always going to be more economical to buy a cheaper older van and fix it occasionally than it is to pay the depreciation on a new one.

Buy a new van for 30k and lose 15k in 5 years or buy a van for 5k whats the chances of it needing 10k of work in 5 years ? Slim to zero.

It all boils down to want not need. A new vehicle is almost never the better financial choice leased or financed or bought outright. There's not even a reliability argument own 2 x 5k vans if you want to never be off the road as even a new one will need to go into the garage at somepoint.

Despite all that logic I still bought a new one haha

That's why I placed the word peppercorn in quotes - the wording was theirs.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that they pay most of the road tax too. I only pay the difference in rates between what it cost at the start and now.
