If its belt driven and not that old of a reel it's probably the belt especially if the noise only occurs when starting to reel in and the noise is not constant or noticeable when reeling in.I've just replaced a belt on one of mine.Started to make noise then snapped shortly after.I'm now going to change the belts yearly when vehicle service is due as preventative maintenance.
Mines made that noise, it had moved off the spindle slightly and the plastic casing was rubbing against the frame…
