3d hose reel help
« on: April 23, 2022, 03:48:06 pm »
I have had my 3d reel now for 3 weeks, it's blown 3 ,40 amp fuses and now when I try to put a new fuse in it starts to wind in on its own with out pressing the buttons, has anyone got a clue what may be the problem

Contacts in the switch fused together?

If it's that new then speak to who ever sold it.

Cheers Ched  that’ll help him it is Saturday and if it’s anyone I’m thinking of in the sales of window cleaning equipment then you’ll have to sort it yourself,I really urgently needed a part sent out to me Thursday for Friday so I can work this Monday,I double then treble checked I was getting the right 2 parts that are essential for me to be able to solve the problem only to receive 1 correct part and the other urgent part that went with it.
Terrible awful service I was assured that this was checked by hand and eye only to find out when I got them that 1 barb was so small it dropped through the female and out the other side, good job I know a plumber and can do a little DIY myself or this would have cost me 100s and 100s of £ in lost income.
I have spares of absolutely everything apart from this small essential part I thought I had in my toolbox 🧰,never buy 1 of anything have at least 1-2 spares including poles-hosereel motors-chains etc you’ll lose far more than they cost you if you can’t work.

If the company is that bad at customer service with a 3 week old reel I would speak to my credit card company and request a chargeback!
OK so back to the problem.
If it's reeling on it's own then it is probably as Spruce has said a failed switch and is shorting the contacts closed. The quick easy fix, if the OP is any good at diy, is to find a replacement high current switch. Halfords only list a 25Amp switch so not really high enough current but you could give one a go as a temp measure. Amazon have this https://amzn.to/3rLHZtc which is a 50Amp momentary switch at about £12 (momentary = only makes connection when pressed and disconnects when released).
All the switch is normally doing is taking 12v in and then when pressed it allows electricity to flow to the reel motor. At a real push you could just touch the 2 wires together but that might be tricky when trying to reel in and control the hose.

If the OP has a bit more skills then it's probably best to replace the supplied 'high current' switch with a relay and a light duty switch as using a switch for high currents isn't the best way to do it although it is a very simple system.

Hope that helps better.

It does come with a manual handle so you can keep working.

I would check all the wiring in the controller box make sure nothings shorting out looks for  wires touching if it’s still a problem get them to replace the reel or change the controller

Same happened to mine. Is it the red switch body ?  I took the switch apart and realised there are two pairs of spade connectors. Swapped wires on to the second pair and is working again so far. I think Spruce is right and contacts in switch have fused together.  I carry a load of spare fuses for it too. Think I paid less than a fiver for a pack of 50 off of eBay. It takes very little resistance from the hose snagging to blow one.

Latest update, I tried changed the wires to try operate the black switch instead of the white one no  change, so I disconnected the wires from the switch all together and still same

Can’t you just go to wicks-B&Q get an on off switch wire that up for the time being.

I bought a couple of resettable fuses, they work perfectly:

RKURCK 12V-28V DC Manual Reset Low Profile ATC Circuit Breaker Resettable Blade Fuse 30A https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07K7FWC1B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VS90QR9SCK0T0E630DJM

30 amp (not 40) but doesn’t make any difference in my experience.

You can’t put the lid on the little fuse holder when you use these, but that’s the only annoyance.

The HD 2 stainless steel and built to last but people that sell stuff don’t want that they soon realises hang on a minute they won’t need to buy another,I have the original chain and motor and yellow switch box the only thing I’ve changed was last week a new brass inlet elbow.
After looking around though the others on offer are sooo heavy and I don’t really want one with a controller like on the system itself, the HD2 is so simple and like most stuff once they start messing with it they ruin it.

Don't.
Go direct and contact waterworks.
